X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Star Oscar Isaac Reveals REAL Reason He Played The Villain (And Where It All Went Wrong)

Oscar Isaac has talked more about his role as En Sabah Nur in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, sharing the real reason he agreed to play the villain (and where it all went wrong for him).

Oscar Isaac is considered one of the finest actors working today, but he hasn't had the easiest time of it when it comes to blockbuster roles.

Despite being excellent as Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, the character wasn't utilised to the fullest of his potential, and Isaac has talked openly about his disappointment with how things played out (including Lucasfilm's failure to tackle a possible relationship with Finn).

Unfortunately, Isaac didn't fare much better in Fox's X-Men Universe, and while he was well cast as En Sabah Nur in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, the villain's appearance left a lot to be desired. The actor found himself hidden beneath heavy, not overly good, prosthetics, and comparisons to Power Rangers' Ivan Ooze quickly turned Isaac into a meme.

During an appearance on the latest episode of Hot Ones, Isaac was asked about being buried under a 40lb costume after previously describing his time as Apocalypse as "excruciating."

"One of the big reasons I did the job, I was like [Michael] Fassbender? Jennifer Lawrence? [James] McAvoy? All these amazing actors. Yeah!" he recalled. "And then I never saw any of them because I was so overheated. And like I couldn’t turn. So, I just got put in this cooling tent."

"Sometimes someone would come by and be like [patting him on the back], 'Hey Oscar.' I’d be like, 'Huh?' And by the time I turned around, they were gone already," Isaac continued. "So, it was very challenging. But I am thankful for the cooling tent."

Despite repeatedly talking negatively about his experience working on X-Men: Apocalypse—Fox's attempt to bring the franchise more in line with the MCU backfired, as it was considered a major disappointment after Days of Future Past—Isaac refused to disown the movie in 2022.

"I know exactly what I went in there wanting to do and the reasons why. There were these amazing actors involved that I really wanted to work with. I collected X-Men growing up, and I loved Apocalypse, I just found him such a freaky, weird character. And then you get there and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got all these prosthetics on. I’ve got a suit on. I can’t move. I can’t see anybody. I still think back to that time with fondness. I wish it would have been a better film and that they would have taken care of the character a little better, but those are the risks."

The actor has since played the MCU's Moon Knight, but with still no word on a Season 2 or any other sort of return plans, it's looking increasingly likely that it was a one-and-done role for Isaac. There's been some Midnight Sons chatter, but nothing concrete.

Appearing at the Paris premiere of Netflix's Frankenstein movie last October, Isaac was asked by a fan whether he'll appear in Avengers: Secret Wars and replied, "It’s a secret, you know...but no."

What a freakin' misfire that was....

@XRayCat - To have a villain with such a huge presence in the comics to be taken out by a group of kids that never had any experience on the battle field, and it was a follow up to DoFP was a big bizarre choice. It should have been at the least, a two parter, dealing with the ramifications of Kitty messing with the timeline. Part 1 could have been set in the past, with En Sabah Nur being displaced into the future at the end, leading to the OG adult cast dealing with him 50 years later in an "Age of Apocalypse". That would have been a more interesting take.

Honestly while I didn’t care much for the movie , I actually thought Isaac was the highlight of the film as Apocalypse…

I enjoyed his cult leader-esque take on the character where he was cold yet charismatic aswell imo.

It does suck though that one of the reasons he signed on was to work & interact with these great actors but wasn’t able to do that due to the limitations of the makeup & prosthetics

Anyway , Moon Knight still remains one of my favorite post EG projects in the MCU so I hope we see him again sooner then later!!.

We need him back as Moonknight, same character design as the D+ show but with more action and less plastic hippo nonsense. The show could have been awesome but instead fell flat.

@Spike101 - Ah yes, Moon Knight, the show that, at best, got a lukewarm response from non-Moon Knight fans...

@Spike101 - They should've gone for a tone similar to Daredevil than Gods of Egypt. Also, they should've cast an actual Jewish actor as Marc.

@Spike101 - I feel like Season 2 should be TV-MA like Born Again and give us flashbacks to season 1 where he blacked out and Jake Lockley was slaughtering enemies.

@Spike101 - Disney is seemingly saying: we'd live to show you the characters you want to see, but first, let's feature:

White Tiger's niece

Karen Page cosplaying as PS5 Spider-Man 2's Mary Jane

Kingpin's handler

Kingpin's protegé

Matt's Ex

Matt's

Phil's niece

Kingpin's protégé girlfriend

Etc...

I loved that movie and him in that role yeah it was underwritten but I did love the camp factor of the serious, tactical suit wearing X-men fighting this guy in heavy prosthetics and a big suit

Xmen apocalypse has a really good first half and build but the second half is incredibly formulaic, lazy, derivative of what’s come before. The biggest let down is apocalypse. He had no character arc other than being “a villain of the week.” The film boasts impressive and sometimes dazzling VFX sequences along with a few dramatically charged moments with the characters but that’s it. Such a let down because apocalypse is a final boss level villain who deserved a better story separated into two films. Missed a really good opportunity there but as a diehard Xmen fan i really enjoy it because it’s fun. The effects, set design, costume, makeup, score, colour grading is sweet.

That film killed the momentum Days of future past built. I hated the over insistance of Raven's importance, especially after we just got that shit in Days, (we get it, Hunger games was big back in the days so JL got the biggest push). The Cyclops casting was a wet fart along with how he was written to be more like a regular bro instead of a boy scout, Sansa or even Jubilee should have been the one to suggest going to the mall to hang out, Scott should have been the hesitant one since he was the social out cast and just recently discovered his eyes shoot lasers and one of his friends is f88king blue so blending in was out of the question. Sansa was an awful choice for Jean, that chick can't act for shit. Quicksilver should have told Magneto he was his son, it would have made sense for him to find out he was his kid and that could have contributed to why Mag turned on Apocalypse after he saw him break Quicksilver's leg, that whole sub plot was nothing but blue balling.
Apocalypse had potential, that moment when he got hold of all the nukes could have been a game changer had they had the ballls to follow through with it and have the movie take a dramatic left turn with a time jump and from that point on the x-men would be in this post apolytic Age of Apocalypse style era but instead we got the saftest lamest outcome that just ensured the status quo remained untouched. No one gave a shit by the time Dark Phoenix came around because of this.

CGI was right there. Why did they go practical? One of the many bad decisions made in those X-Men movies...

@ComicPundit - "CGI was right there. Why did they go practical?"
...I never thought the day would come where I read someone suggest that going practical over CGI was a mistake.

Usually its the other way around.

(Spitballed idea: if Apocalypse ever shows up in the MCU and they opt to keep Oscar Isaac as him AND Marc... imply that En Sabah Nur's recent body was an ancestor of Marc's.)

He is an excellent actor who I hope finds a breakout role. He would have been a great Magneto after Doomsday.

He deserved way better than that sh!tty Moon Knight show. I only want a 2nd season of it if they fire every single writer/director/producer connected to season 1.

Apocalypse should've been fully CGI like Thanos, not this.

No wonder Fox had to sell to Disney, although I do miss when there was more variety in CBMs. I can contend with dumpster fires like Dark Phoenix and Apocalypse if that means I get something like Deadpool and Logan every few years. And the first 2/3rds of The Wolverine was great.

@soberchimera - The bone marrow draining mecha fountain of youth samurai suit and skin shedding bald alien looking Viper ruined it for me personally. Why did she even rip her skin off, it didn't even make her stronger even as a "final form" just bizarre. It was relatively grounded then the third act derailed it. But I've read Rogue was supposed to return and the suit emulated her powers of draining energy, which would have made more sense.

@abd00bie - The wolverine has the worst third act ever. Absolutely ridiculous. The first two acts are fine and then it all falls apart.

I don't get the sentiment of treating the movie as such a big failure. I thought it was fine.
