I liked the movie a lot but there were some flaws to it...none of it fatal but unlike the Marvel Disney movies X-men as a franchise X-Men does not seem to show gradual upward progression but bounces from really good to really bad to middling. This movie falls in the middling category.

THE BAD - Jennifer Lawrence was wasted in the film. The themes of her being a hero were touched upon but fell somewhat flat as a motivation for the other mutants. Magneto's character started strong giving an emotional heft to the movie but fizzled toward the end crowded out by the other characters. Also Storm's character (one of the leaders of the x-Men traditionally) was shallow with her being treated like a 'sidekick' and even moreso for Psylocke. Finally the relationship between Xavier and Moira seemed forced and incomplete. She mentions having a child...where did this come from and what is the audience to make of it?

THE GOOD - There were excellent performances by Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaac, Evan Peters, and Tye Sheridan. Each gave a depth to their characters that made them interesting and in most cases sympathetic. The film sets up an opportunity for Fox to break up the stories of future X-Men movies...perhaps into X-Force, X-men and Brotherhood of Mutants. The set up for the Phoenix story-line was well done as well as the burgeoning relationship between Cyclops and Jean Grey. The action was exciting and overall given the number of characters, it was for the most part juggled well.

They rushed Phoenix, Quicksilvers scene popped out of nowhere, Mystique was wasted, and the gaps in the movie itself and the continuity from the last one left me scratching me head a bit
