47 RONIN Sequel Taps LUCIFER Star Aimee Garcia And Former WWE Superstar AJ Mendez To Pen Screenplay

It's been confirmed that Lucifer star Aimee Garcia and New York Times bestselling author AJ Mendez are teaming up to pen the screenplay for the 47 Ronin sequel, and it sounds like they have exciting plans.

47 Ronin was released in 2013, and while it featured an impressive cast (including Keanu Reeves and Hiroyuki Sanada), it had very little in common with the real-life legend from 18th Century Japan. The generic fantasy movie received mostly negative reviews and was later described as being among "Hollywood's biggest box office bombs of 2013."

Even so, a sequel/reboot is in the works from director Ron Yuan (who played Sergeant Qiang in Mulan), and Deadline reveals that the project has now found a pair of writers.

Lucifer and Dexter star Aimee Garcia is teaming up with New York Times bestselling author AJ Mendez (once known as AJ Lee in WWE) to pen the screenplay.

"AJ and I are excited to write a diverse and inclusive action film," said Garcia. "Director Ron Yuan’s vision to blend martial arts, horror, cyber-punk and action was inspiring and we’d like to thank the team at 1440 for being so supportive."

As creators of color, we’re honored to be part of a modern, multicultural story with powerful female leads," adds Mendez.

Garcia and Mendez co-wrote the comic book series based on Netflix's GLOW as well as IDW Publishing's Dungeons and Dragons. They're also set to write Wonder Woman for DC Comics this July. 47 Ronin is based on Chūshingura, and is supposed to tell the story of 47 rōnin, a group of samurai who set out to avenge the death of their master who was killed by a merciless shogun.

Hopefully, this interpretation will be a little more authentic than the last one...

I know I have seen it, but I don't remember a lot from it. Don't think this needs a sequel

Don't mind the ladies penning a good movie script (hopefully) but it doesn't need to be called 47 Ronin. It can be a take off on it but don't call it that. The movie from the 60's "Chūshingura" (a remake by the way) stands on its own and is the best of the bunch. That Keanu Reeves disaster from 2013 was a joke to put it in as nice a way as possible.

Wait, wait...sequel? Reboot? So it's definitely attatched to the 2013 version?
I would have thought they'd make a new take on the legend instead of following that disaster.

With that description, what could possibly go wrong?

When I watched the Shang Chi trailer it unfortunately reminded me of 47 Ronin. I've still got faith in it, I just wish they would have leaned into the 70s kung fu influence little more. A mix of Enter the Dragon and Big trouble in little Vhina would have been perfect.

Considering the 1st one was a so lackluster, I am actually excited for this development. I wish more struggling franchises would take bolder steps like changing the creative team like this. I'm very interested to see what Lee and Garcia bring!

This sounds like TOTAL AND COMPLETE GARBAGE!
The 47 Ronin with a female lead??!! If some who are serious about the legacy of this classic story were upset with Keanu Reeve's version (which I absolutely love) they are going to be furious with this!
Just makes you wonder, when is this WOKE INSANITY going to stop? It's absolutely ruining everything!

Horror, cyberpunk, inclusive, multicultural female lead action movie? At what point does any of this sound like 47 Ronin, either the bad movie or the OG tale? The story is about 47 Japanese men with swords going on a killing spree for their dead Lord, it’s not exactly a tale with morals and ethics that can be transplanted to a different context just like that.

A 47 Ronin-inspired tale on a Cyberpunk world could be interesting, a team of employees avenging their dead boss by killing the CEO of a giant corporation that rules the land, and opens the cast up to be a multi-cultural agglomeration of people, with different looks, weapons & strengths. Maybe they worked in a workers co-op, that gets a hostile takeover from the big corp after their boss is killed, it forefronts the anti-Capitalist cyberpunk themes & give the ‘ronin’ a reason to be *that* loyal to the guy. It could work as it’s own thing that doesn’t even feign an attempt at actually adapting the tale or being the sequel to the crappy movie, instead just using it as a backbone.
