Ben Whishaw Cast As "Q" In Skyfall

It seems that James Bond's gadget man will return in the next installment and be played by 31-year-old British actor Ben Whishaw. A much younger take on the character then...

We had already heard rumors that Whishaw had been cast in the movie but now the BBC website has confirmed that the young actor will indeed be joining the very impressive cast of Sam Mendes' Skyfall as none other than Q, the man who provides Bond with all of his cool gadgets.

Q was previously played by Desmond Llewelyn in From Russia With Love and every subsequent Bond movie except Live And Let Die and Never Say Never Again until his passing in 1999. John Cleese then played the character in both of the Pierce Brosnan efforts. So at 31, 12 years younger than Daniel Craig, this will definitely be a different take on the sort of mentor/student role we have seen previously.

Whishaw is probably best known for playing the lead in the creepy big screen adaptation of the novel Perfume but he has also appeared in numerous British tv shows. Filming is currently under-way on Skyfall under the direction of Sam Mendes. As well as Daniel Craig and Ben Whishaw the movie stars Javier Bardem, Dame Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes and Albert Finney.

It was about time to bring characters like Q and Moneypenny to the Craig era.
I'm all open for Q on it, loved the character on the classic movies. Not sure about this dude, he is younger than Craig, so we will not have that thing of mentor, or the unofficial father for Bond. But let's see, I just hope we have a Q that is always criticizing Bond like in the old times hehe.

So he's going to be some kind of super-kid genius? - they'd better get it right because Desmond Llewelyn's portrayal is a tall-order to top.

Utter crap, they've now ruined this series by following the other films instead of the books like the first two Craig movies. There is no Q in the books, Bond has no silly gadgets either, all that crap was made up for the movies and it got so ridiculous that they had to reboot in the first place with Casino Royale and that's the best bond film they'll ever make now simply because it follows the book and doesn't resort to following the silly movies that came before it!

And just for the record, there is a General Mortimer in the books who supplies Bond his guns, he's called the Quartermaster, they changed that to "Q" in the films to follow the "M" thing and turned him into a gadget man instead of a sensible weapons specialist!

Will be the best Bond film yet... Can't wait

Interesting. Casino Royal's sequel (I can't remember the name) didn't really hit it off with me, but hopefully this one will be awesome. A younger Q may sounds upsetting, but then again, he could be the 'Howard Stark' (Young, playboy, genius) of MI6.

Craig´s Bond already has a mentor/mother figure and its M.
So i dont mind at all that Q is younger in this film.

At least he could fill in for numerous films like Llewelyn did. I think they're looking for long term commitment. Not an older actor that'll do three films and stop. Whishaw's probably in for the long haul (17 films like Llewelyn would be my guess)...

Sounds pretty nice...though I hope if he really is in, the gadgets he provides won't be THAT much, either. I still really love the more realistic take on this Bond.

teabag That's best indeed. :)

Just as long as the gadgets have a realistic purpose. I've been enjoyint the last 2 film's more grounded take on 007. And John Cleese played R, a different character altogether who played Q.

QoS was excellent, just wasn't for the popcorn audience who grew up watching those ridiculous Bond films of Roger Moore and after that strayed into the foolishness of gadgets and ladies with stupid names and cars that had more weaponry than tanks!

QoS was the perfect movie to set between Casino Royale and Live and Let Die which is the second book they should have made instead of this Skyfall crap. QoS isn't a mission story, its a short story that shows Bond what can happen when you allow one event to forever change you as a person. QoS used that to illustrate the progression from the blunt instrument Bond of Casino Royale, to the professional he becomes in the later books. Naturally it went over the majority of the popcorn audience as they were brought up on the cinema Bond always having everything he doesn't in the books, the silly gadgets, the whole "Q" thing and the cars and ladies with progressively silly names!

Seems like they've derailed the sensible run to give the popcorn audience what they want. Guess it happens to all the actors who play Bond, they have to have the one film that so bad the producers go looking for another Bond to take over the part! Goodbye Craig!

Technically speaking the only reason why Bond called Q...'Q' was because he represented Q-Branch with the Q standing for Quartermaster, someone who distributes supplies.

We don't know John Cleese's character's name since they never mention it. Llewelyn's character was named Major Boothroyd hisfirst name being Geoffrey (although that fact wasn't covered in the films)...John Cleese played 'Q' after Llewelyn passed away, not 'R'

Contrary to what people believe Q was actually in the books but it just in a smaller capacity: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_(James_Bond)

The ancestry of the Q character is rather complicated. In the Fleming novels there are frequent references to Q and "Q Branch" with phrases like "see Q for any equipment you need" (Casino Royale) and "Q Branch would handle all of that" (Diamonds are Forever), with a reference to "Q's craftsmen" in From Russia with Love. In the sixth novel, Dr. No, the service armourer Major Boothroyd appears for the first time. Fleming named the character after Geoffrey Boothroyd, a firearms expert who lived in Glasgow, Scotland.[1] He had written to the novelist suggesting that Bond was not using the best firearms available. Boothroyd is also referenced occasionally in the Bond novels of John Gardner, but the author preferred instead to focus on a new character. Charles Fraser-Smith is also widely credited as being the inspiration for Q[2] due to the spy gadgets he'd built for the Special Operations Executive being called "Q-devices" after the Royal Navy's World War I Q-ships.

Famous 'Q' quote:

"...and try and bring it back in one piece this time 007!"

Finally! I was wondering when we would see Q in the new movies.

Huh, I guess they're going with a much younger Q. I wonder how Bond is going to feel about being briefed from someone much younger than himself.

"Don't touch that! That's my lunch!" Always gets me.
