We had already heard rumors that Whishaw had been cast in the movie but now the
BBC website has confirmed that the young actor will indeed be joining the very impressive cast of Sam Mendes'
Skyfall as none other than Q, the man who provides Bond with all of his cool gadgets.
Q was previously played by Desmond Llewelyn in
From Russia With Love and every subsequent Bond movie except
Live And Let Die and
Never Say Never Again until his passing in 1999. John Cleese then played the character in both of the Pierce Brosnan efforts. So at 31, 12 years younger than Daniel Craig, this will definitely be a different take on the sort of mentor/student role we have seen previously.
Whishaw is probably best known for playing the lead in the creepy big screen adaptation of the novel
Perfume but he has also appeared in numerous British tv shows. Filming is currently under-way on
Skyfall under the direction of Sam Mendes. As well as Daniel Craig and Ben Whishaw the movie stars Javier Bardem, Dame Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes and Albert Finney.
