BOX OFFICE: THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE Closing In On $500 Million Worldwide

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire took an amazing $31.3 million yesterday, putting it well on track to earning $500 million worldwide. With a current domestic haul of $253.3 million, its total cume today stands at $482.3 million. The Francis Lawrence helmed sequel is currently on course to have one of the best second weekends in the history of the North American box office with a five day Thanksgiving total of $110 million, and north of $75 million for the weekend itself. Despite facing stiff competition from Frozen, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire now holds the prestigious honour of being the highest grossing Thanksgiving movie. Meanwhile, Spike Lee's Oldboy is a massive flop as it now looks likely to gross an embarrassing $1.2 million for the five days.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen

Surprisingly good movie. Much better then the first. I'm actually glad Oldboy is flopping I loved the original and I don't want to see the studios start taking every classic foreign film and remaking it. Oldboy flopping should cut this off hopefully.

Loved this movie. I thought the first was ok, it didn't get me excited for this one though. But after I finished seeing it in theaters, I was blown away.

Can't wait for the next two.

my prediction is that this movie will be the second highest grossing movie of the year in the USA e the third highest grossing movie worldwide. I think the Hobbit 2 will gross more a billion but in the USA the movie won't do as much business as Cathcing FIre which might get close to 400 million. If they beat the original 408 million in the USA that means they will end up being the highest grossing movie of the year but analysts are predicting something a little lower than the first in the USA and higher B.O overall.

As much disappointed as I was wit Iron Man 3 I hope the Marvel movie stills on the top for this years highest grossing movie of the year. I love when my team wins even when I don't like the way they are playing.

Why is Catching Fire's success The Dark World's failure? Marvel got their money back for Thor's sequel AND it's not "done" until they stop showing it.

Catching Fire wiped the shit stain Thor 2 left in my mouth, which is interesting because I hated the first Hunger Games.

Catching Fire had all the right dramatic, humor, action, and character beats.

Thor: The Dark World, if anything, had all the wrong everything. Better take a subway and smile when a girl hugs me while the universe is on the brink of destruction.

Woah, I didn't really expect Oldboy to perform that badly. :O

The Hunger Games franchise really seems to be... on fire! ;) By now I'm actually tempted to watch it on the big screen.

@batman1216, I recall all of 2 users saying Thor would gross $1B. Most of the people calling Thor a failure for not reach that ridiculous goal are only saying it to twist the knife for the overzealous fanboys that made the claim. Unless, BboiBlack and desrow are Marvel lunatics, I have yet to see any Marvel fanboys call it a failure. Even if they did, they would be wrong, because "success" and "failure" unlike quality is measurable, and it is a fact that T:TDW is a success.

Omega

Movies are movies, comic books are comic books.

Marvel needs to establish a tone. Is Tony Stark going to crack a joke about Caps age after Thanos has destroyed half the world?

It's in bad taste. Some moments are completely dramatic and others are mixed with humor? When is the right time for which moment.

"I suggest you never take the time to read these things called COMIC BOOKS"

"The amount of jokes, smiles, and moments of situational humor in the midst of dire circumstances would likely make you have a seizure, stroke and heart attack simultaneously"

IKR, where are are the serious ass comic books that people are reading. It's part of the superhero trait to laugh in the face of danger. They are larger than life and that is he problem with CBMs grounded in realism as Omega pointed out in another article. At some point it's no longer a CBM and moreso a generic action movie with scifi elements. That realism robs CBMs of the comic book element.
thewonderer
thewonderer - 11/30/2013, 10:55 AM

Except comic books on the screen aren't comic books, they're comic book movies.

To be a comic book movie, you need to be BOTH. A movie and a comic book.

Guess people here are accepting of the fact that these movies are comic books on the screen. As a fan of comic books and the film medium in general, it's hard for me to accept something so lazy.

How you can compare a film like Catching Fire with Thor is beyond. One took so much more effort and skill.

To say that Thor: The Dark World is done after it has grossed $561,055,000 in only 22 days just because Catching Fire is on its way to making more money is not only ignorant, but also reeks of trolling and a pathetic attempt at starting a flame war.

Funny, because movies based on The Hunger Games and Harry Potter get praised for how they closely they stick to the source material and "bring it to life." But, for comic books it seems to be a different standard for quality which is geared towards making it seem more realistic and less like a comic book. Why is there a double standard across mediums for adaptations? Catching Fire captures the tone of the book and it's "brilliant" but for CBMs it's "just lazy?"

@batman1216 - 11/30/2013, 10:52 AM

"@ Enphlieuwince Some of Marvels most remembered and beloved classics, such as Death of Gwen Stacy, Demon in a Bottle, The Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, Born Again, etc. are not exactly known for their humor."

Very true, but, there are more comics with situational humor and jokes than not I'd bet. Why does a CBM have to be serious to be taken seriously? Movies like Snatch and Pulp Fiction have humor everywhere and they are classic.

Thor TDW is a success for Marvel. Marvel might be slightly disappointed by the domestic total but overseas it's doing amazing compared to the first film. I think the bar has been set for CA:WS. Thor TDW is going to wind up over 600 million, I'm not sure CA plays as well overseas but if it goes over 500 million I think that's really good. I'm intersted to see if Catching Fire out grosses TDKR from last year.
Enphlieuwince
Enphlieuwince - 11/30/2013, 11:23 AM
@batman1216, I agree, and I believe MS WILL go into more serious territory, but, I believe they want it to be special. Like, if every villain is the "badass-take-the-world" type, it becomes repetitive fast. When you.re connecting so many movies with so many different threats, it becomes hard to outdo yourself i think the audience will know Thanos is the threat of all threats when the jokes cease. Like Chris Pratt said, humor helps bring it back and take you on more of an emotional ride with lesser stakes. I think it's brilliant.

Actually, to be fair, the Demon In A Bottle saga did have humor. When Tony was off to the rescue and flew through a closed window and shattered it because he was too buzzed to realize it wasn't already opened was a very funny scene.

"well I think the guys that are hating on marvel is because frankly the 2 movies they released this year is just god-damn awful , they are just as clichéd and plotless as all the transformers movies . So how can someone hate and bitch about transformers and praise mcu films wherever they go ?? That is why people who hate marvel hate marvel."

There's so much wrong in that comment..I..ummm...I just....I'm sorry bro...

It's one thing to dislike the MCU films but it's another thing to compare them to the Transformers films. Do you know why people praise the MCU films instead of the TF films? Because the MCU films are better written that's why. So please if you're trying to troll GTFO!!!
