Spider-Man: Brand New Day remained atop the North American box office this weekend, grossing a spectacular $39 million during its fourth weekend in theaters. That takes it up to $854.9 million domestically, meaning it's just $3.4 million away from beating Avengers: Endgame's $858.3 million record.
With that, Spidey's latest solo outing will become the second highest-grossing movie ever at the U.S. box office. How long it will keep that record remains to be seen, as Avengers: Endgame returns to theaters next month as the extended Avengers: Endgame Encore.
The next hurdle for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is $900 million (highly likely) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens' $936.7 million record (less likely). While it's not impossible, Spidey may remain in second place when all is said and done.
Globally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to astonish, reaching an incredible $2.22 billion worldwide. Again, how much higher it will swing from there depends on many factors, but this one probably isn't done breaking records quite yet.
Insidious: Out of the Further opened to a solid $25.3 million stateside this weekend, while The Odyssey took third place with $19.5 million during its sixth weekend playing in multiplexes. That was followed by Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie ($9.1 million), The End of Oak Street ($9 million), and Mutiny, the new Jason Statham action movie, which struggled to find an audience with just $7.5 million.
Other noteworthy box office news this weekend saw both Obsession and Minions & Monsters surpass $500 million worldwide, with The Odyssey reaching $1.4 billion. Moana, meanwhile, will go down as one of Disney's lowest-grossing live-action adaptations, reaching just $306 million globally.
In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.
But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.
In our review, we concluded by saying, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day is everything fans could want. Emotional, hilarious, and heartfelt, it’s an action-packed love letter to the comics and one of Spidey’s best big-screen adventures. Spider-Man has never been more amazing."
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.
