Deadline reports that The Hunger Games has grossed $131.6 million internationally and $269.3 million domestically during its first 13 days of release. This of course means that it has now crossed a total of $400 million at the worldwide box office. Apparently, the big screen adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novel is set to be #1 again for this Easter weekend with an estimated $12M - $14M Friday and $40M over the weekend. Despite this being its third weekend on release, locations are still selling out and it has held off competition from other big releases such as American Reunion and Titanic 3D.

is it based on a comic book? is this film considered CMB?

I see the top 5 biggest grosses of the year being:
The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey
The Avengers
The Dark Knight Rises
The Amazing Spider-Man
Skyfall

Prometheus could be a good contender.

Well done to the Hunger Games. I haven't read the book but the film was great.

it was good but not great, john carter deserves to do better than it has.

i believe the only two films this year that'll come close to doing a billion is the hobbit & the amazing spider-man.

the avengers & the dark knight rises will do about $850,000,000.

I still have to see this movie! Also, a lot of people are naive here. The top 2 movies of the year wll be, The Dark Knight Rises and POSSIBLY The Avengers. TASM will do well, a lot of people will see it, but there's no hype surrounding the film. Most people have seen all 3 spidermans in the past 10 years. The general population might hold off on seeing it, because its another Spiderman movie. And I can see The Avengers having a chance beating The Dark Knight. And the only reason it could, is because every comic book nerd, like ourselves will see it, and probably every kid in America. Where as The Dark Knight Rises is only really aimed for adults. To me, it will be quality over quantity. And I guarantee you, The Dark Knight Rises will be the best quality CBM film this year.

Your logic of saying that no one will want to see Spider-Man cause they've already seen 3 is a bit stupid. By that logic no one will want to see The Dark Knight Rises because there have already been 7.

box office this year
1. TDKR- it's the dark kinght is the highest grossing CBM of all time so it's more than likely people will return to see the third.
2. Tied TASM-The avengers: the reason why I tied this is because either one could be on top spiderman could easily overtake the avengers because it's spiderman and he has to be the most recognized super hero in the world. The Avengers because they have been building up hype for this film through other marvel films but one thing that might hurt marvel is there highest grossing film is Iron man 1 all the others have been mediocre in the box office so that will be hard. In my own personal opinion I think spiderman will come out on top just because this will be spidermans second apparence on the silver screen as a new character and people will be very curious to see how this new cast and crew will pull of this movie( especially Andrew Garfield because he is playing PP)

The Dark Knight Rises is Batman. EVERYONE knows Batman, not everyone knows The Avengers, or Captain America, Iron Man or Black Widow.

But everyone knows Batman. Avengers is also teenager aimed, and more childish, Batman can be enjoyed by kids and adults seriously.

The Dark Knight Rises will become the 4th highest grossing film of all time. Watch.

Don't forget that girls love spider-man and will rather see Emma stone and Andrew Garfield then RDJ, while on the subject of box office draws if marvel would have hired liam hemsworth rather than chris it would have helped out trmendously for thor and the avengers because girls are IN LOVE with LIAM because they think he is so HOT! But it seems Andrew Garfield will be the girls main attraction this year so thats 1 more point for the amazing spiderman at the box office. dont forget its spiderman and everyone loves spiderman

That's a pretty impressive number. especially when you consider that hunger games was only released in 2d.

@Kaedus-whoa, whoa, whoa... I did not say no one will see it! Hell I'm sure a ton of people will, myself included! Yes, Batman has many films, but do not compare the 2 sets of movies.

Number 1: Everyone WANTED a new Batman movie, after the travesty of Batman and Robin. And after hearing Chris Nolan was directing, a lot of people had a lot of faith. Nolan also was rebooting the series, and telling a story about Batman, thats never been told on film, his origin. Mr. Webbs story, has to be pretty close to Raimis. Spidermans origin will be told twice now, and it really cant be all THAT different. It's been done. That might not spark all that much interest to some general folks.

Number 2: Batman Begins was a good 10 years or more after that horrible B&R film. People were excited to finally see a new Batman movie after all that time.

Number 3: Raimi's Spiderman wasn't that long ago...SM3 was 5 years ago or so. Raimi gave us 3 solid Spiderman movies. The third wasn't great, but didn't leave a terrible taste in your mouth like Batman and Robin did. A lot of people still remember the last 3 spidermans quite well, they weren't that long ago.

What I'm saying is, people aren't DESPERATE for a new Spiderman. I'm sure plenty of people will see it, myself included. I'm just saying that TASM won't end up being gigantic force at the box office. It will do well, but not THAT well. TASM, I'm sure, will be roughly around how Batman Begins did at the box office. CB people are stoked for all these films. But I think some people will wait to see the movie later on. The general audience isn't desperate for the reboot already, even though we are :) I am excited to see it though!

In terms of box office success I would predict the following for 2012.

1 - The Hobbit
2 - TDKR
3 - Prometheus
4 - Spiderman
5 - Skyfall
5 - Avengers
6 - Hunger Games

what the heck, this film isn't even in the hottest nor the most anticipated movie of the year yet surprisingly this goes on to earn a big sum of gold at the box office, now that's totally surprising. applied that to a film highly regarded as the CBM's most wanted this year talking about TDKR and Avengers now that's something to really look forward to. i don't know about the Hobbit but it looks pale to me, Spider-man (not even cared about this one), Prometheus (looks good), Skyfall (well it's a Bond Film, it has it's fan base), though i have big doubts TDKR would be this years King -- it had it's time with the combination of H.Ledgers unfortunate passing, good story continuity (on TDK) but this time around (TDKR vs. Bane?...)

R888 - 4/7/2012, 8:29 AM
I think Prometheus will rule the box office because its looks really good and its alien prequel, the avengers will do well no doubt it will knock this hunger games off its ass, the TDKR well that will knock the avengers off not sure about spiderman, I sure hobbit will get past that 1 billion too.

But that the top 5 films of the year

if prometheus is r-rated it won't out gross spider-man,the avengers or the hunger games.

it has the potential of being the best movie of the year but not toppling those movies i mentioned above.

It could, considering Casino Royale did about 600 Million at the box office.
Who knows. we're all guessing.

Predicting Avengers box office is very difficult. You guys need to remember they're pumping more money into it than any of the individual projects. Also, I fail to see why this one would make any more than Iron Man 2 (highest grossing of all the solo projects)

(: it deserves all the success it's getting.

@ SuspenseSmith

i totally agree,it has more chance of winning awards & being a classic than most other r-rated movies.

@ thewonderer

you could say the same about the dark knight rises, missing batman's most famous & popular villain the joker it might take the same money as batman begins.

@Azazel1: Actually, Ironman 2 did $623 million worldwide. It is the highest grossing solo project. You are confused because you are only paying attention to the domestic gross. Ironman 2's domestic gross was only $312 million. The domestic gross is just how much money it received in America.
Irons
Irons - 4/7/2012, 9:17 AM
Not sure what to think about The Avengers money-wise. Iron Man 2 sold less tickets domestically than Iron Man 1 and none of the other Marvel Studios films were real smashes at the box office. The most any of them did overseas was 311 million.

But the hype is enormous, there are 3d prices and releasing it early overseas could help. I think it will be front-loaded and has a real shot at 160+ opening weekend. I'll go with the wide range of 800-900.
CaptainAmerica31
CaptainAmerica31 - 4/7/2012, 9:42 AM
@suspensesmith i would put TASM in the guaranteed success because Emma stone is also a rising star who attracts a lot of people and come on now SPIDER-MAN being a wild card is a little insulting to the character don't you think :)
thewonderer
thewonderer - 4/7/2012, 10:00 AM
@marvel

Thing is, TDK left off on a cliffhanger, and the fact that so many people saw that one makes that many want to see this one. The marketing will also be high come June.

So no you can't say the same thing as the prequel made a billion dollars.
MadTitan
MadTitan - 4/7/2012, 10:05 AM
@SuspenseSmith - totally agree with you on placing TA Spider-man on the wildcard, simply put being a huge Spidey fan like myself and knowing a lot of fellow Spidey fan for that matter wasn't even excited about the unnecessary re boot. but with respect to the character it will still make money being a well known character that he is. and rising stars are not a guarantee it will pull the sales up coming from the term "rising stars" itself it could also mean a disastrous fall that even established box office crowd fave stars experience in their careers.
