BOX OFFICE: THE LONE RANGER Opens With An Unimpressive $9.67M

After earning just $2M from its Tuesday night late shows, Disney's The Lone Ranger failed to do much better when it opened officially on Wednesday. The movie earned under $10M, being left in the dirt by Despicable Me 2 with $35M.

You'd almost have to feel sorry for The Lone Ranger. Back in August 2011 Disney shut down production on the movie for six months after the budget ballooned out of control; now they must be wishing they'd never started back up again! Gore Verbinski's take on the legendary Texas lawman has badly underperformed with only $9.67M Wednesday. According to analysts this means the movie may not even pass $50M for its first 5 days -- way below even Disney’s low-ball projection of $65M for North America. The Lone Ranger most likely won’t cover its $215M-$250M cost despite this holiday’s 4x multiple. By stark contrast, Universal's animated sequel Despicable Me 2 raked in a whopping $35M, which is higher than Monsters University‘s Friday take of $30.5M last month. Will you be venturing out to the flicks this 4th of July weekend? If so, what will you be seeing?

Have no plans on seeing this. Disney is probably banking on Depp to bring in the overseas market to off set its poor US showing

Seriously, has any quality animated film lost out to a live action film on opening weekend or holiday?
I said "quality" because there are some crappy ones made. (non-Pixar usually.)

Those animated kids movies are like printing money.
If I were a movie producer I would only back CG animated projects if I want big returns on my investment & guaranteed sequel revenue.

If tickets weren't as high as they were I wouldn't mind giving it a try but it seems like now people have to be more selective about what they're going to see

Never actually seen him in anything but the bandwagon stopped right outside my house. How could i not jump on? :P

Just seems alot of press about recent films are lacking. John Carter had a great history when looked back into, considering when it was written etc. I think these movies may have more success by making them a 'thing' that people are already into the idea of by the time its released. A little enlightening for the audience might peak some interest

3:10 to Yuma = the best modern western

the only way to redeem the Lone Ranger is making a crossover sequel with Zorro.
