Universal recently released an image onto Twitter officially confirming Leitch will be directing the film, as well as confirming the rumoured title: Hobbs & Shaw.

Fast & Furious screenwriter Chris Morgan, who has penned six installments of the blockbuster series, including the most recent The Fate of the Furious, also turned in the spinoff script. The release date is set as July 26, 2019 - arriving in theaters before the ninth installment of its parent franchise.

According to IMDb, the upcoming spin off will be:

Focusing on Johnson's US Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs forming an unlikely alliance with Statham's Deckard Shaw.

Following the announcement from the official Fast & Furious Twitter account, Leitch himself tweeted out an article:

It doesn't get any more definitive than that.

Not really what I expected. Thought they'd go with Justin Lin, but Leitch is a good choice too

@MalseMarcel - I think Lin’s gonna be too busy with 9 and 10.

Work as a reader at an agency in Hollywood. Read this script a few weeks ago. Oooh boy... is there an award for best adapted screenplay of my dreams?

Seriously though, it's a ton of fun. Glad to see a quality action director attached.

The Rock and Statham were the best part of the last one.

I remember back when F8 was about to come out, Vin Diesel and the Rock were feuding. I didn’t believe it. It felt like a publicity stunt. But if it is true, then Vin Diesel needs to grow up. The guy doesn’t put butts in seats. His Riddick movies lose money. The Last Witch Hunter bombed. Outside of Fast and Furious, the movies that he leads kinda tend to flop. I mean outside of Fast and Furious and Guardians of the Galaxy (which could easily happen without him), what does he have going for him?

Don't know why they keep pushing David Leitch into the spotlight. Atomic Blonde was okay but nothing special. It had one good fight scene in it and the story was pretty shit. Deadpool 2 looks fun, but again nothing really special. If you look at John Wick 2 it's obvious that Chad Stahelski was the brains behind the first one. I don't know I just don't think Leitch is that much of a good director.
