We don't know much about Universal's Fast & Furious spin-off starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, but in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the star of the upcoming Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle gave fans of the action-racing franchise something to get excited about.

"We've got a lot of surprises," Johnson teased. Johnson, who joined the franchise in 2011's Fast Five, also provided some background on the spin-off and how it came to fruition.

“It’s been a challenging process because I feel like my intention from day one, when I first joined the cast, was to hopefully come in, have fun, and create a character that people will hopefully like and try to elevate the franchise,” Johnson explained. “But in the process of elevating the franchise, I have always thought that in order for this to have real longevity and legs, we should spin out and create characters that can live on their own.”

The Fast & Furious franchise has been a monster hit for Universal, with the studio weighing a potential spin-off since the release of Fast & Furious 6 in 2013. However, it wasn't until this year's Fate of the Furious the production on the project really kicked into gear. Franchise veteran Chris Morgan is writing the script, with Johnson himself teasing some "big stars" lined up for the spin-off.

“At the end of the day, the only thing I want to do is make a great movie for the fans," he said.

The Rock's Fast & Furious spin-off will race into theaters July 26, 2019.

As an avid car enthusiast and fan of of the series...just stoppppppp. The franchise really lost its touch and heart when Paul passed. The brotherhood between him and Vin was obvious and made the movies so much better, no matter how outlandish it was.

I know it's asking too much, because these will make money over and over...but it definitely lost its magic for me.

@MrPositive - this is called comicbook movie.com I give a pass to certain films based on novels since it’s somewhat close to the medium but the fast and furious franchise? Nah it was just a film that came out in the early 2000’s about street racing

Na this franchise doesn't need longevity, it needs to end.

Fast Five was really the only "good" one

@BlackBeltJones - i like fast 7 its cheesy and that ending was the greatest thing they could've done in this franchise

I get the appeal of a spinoff with Statham and the Rock. But honestly, they could just as easily make a completely new movie unrelated to the Fast franchise with those two and it would generate just as much buzz. Is there anything about their characters in those movies that's going to add to this movie? I didn't see this last movie but based on what I saw in 5, 6, & 7 I don't see anything that's necessary. I guess there's the marque value of the Fast name but you could just as easily start new franchise with these two headlining.

Will one of those surprises be that Kevin Hart is replacing Tyrese?

People always talking about a franchise needs to end like they are forced to watch it. If they have a story to tell and make money it will continue.

Man this franchise changed so much since the early days of street racing and stealing DVD players.
