Despite suggesting that he would be open to directing Marvel's Black Panther movie and later becoming an actual contender, F. Gary Gray has confirmed that Fast and Furious 8 will be his next gig following Straight Outta Compton. The filmmaker recently took to Twitter to break the news saying, "Can't ask for better partners than Vin [Diesel], [producer] Neal [H. Moritz] and Universal [Pictures]." He added, "Excited to bring u the next chapter of the #FastFamily saga."

Goddamnit!!! My hype for Black Panther just went down. Straight Outta Compton is my second favorite film of the year behind Mad Max Fury Road.

Really wanted him for Black Panther.

Marvel should go after Ryan Coogler.

Creed looks incredible and Fruitvale Station was amazing.

I'm with @LEVITKUZ

Straight Outta Compton was right behind Mad Max as film of the year for me

Technically, as some have said, he could still fit BP into his schedule, but since directors on Marvel movies usually work on movies 6-10 months for pre-production, it probably won't happen.

There are still plenty of good candidates out there.

I agree. Ryan Coogler would be a good choice, too.

I could easily see this being his own way of determining if his willing/able to direct the Black Panther movie. Not that he'd need to for Disney to hire him, but by working on an action heavy movie it might help him decide if he wants to continue working in this genre. Maybe F8 will appease his interest in the action genre, maybe F8 will peak his interest and spark ideas for a Black Panther.

He's a solid director, so I'm definitely interested in F8. And it'll be interesting to see what, if anything, comes of F. Gary Gary & Black Panther. I love The Negotiator & Set It Off is largely the reason I wanted/hoped Queen Latifah would be cast as Amanda Waller.

Great call!! He's definitely an upcoming writer/director to keep an eye.

I have high hopes for Creed. I've watched both Creed trailers so many times!

Black Panther comes out the February of the following year. He could do both.

Probably has more creative freedom with the F&F franchise.

@gusto

Good call. Destroy your brain with alcohol, not with Vin Diesel dialogue.

As much as I have enjoyed the Fast franchise....this puts a bad taste in my mouth. First are foremost, Paul Walker & Vin Desiel made this series. How you gonna do a new one without Walker and a few years after his death? I was trilled by the CGI Walker, but in that case he had almost finished the movie, so I reckon it was ok. Plus how the hell are they not out of ideas? Just like I said about Jurassic Park, they kinda can't go any further. F&F has already gone up against planes, trains, tanks, amored F1 style cars, etc... Where do you go from there? A spaceship? Crap.....theres gonna be a bad guy in a spaceship isnt there?
