GLASS Director M. Night Shyamalan Reveals He Nearly Linked THE VISIT To His UNBREAKABLE Sequel As Well

Glass served as a sequel to both Unbreakable and Split, and filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan has now confirmed that he also intended to have The Visit take place in this world of superpowered beings...

Moviegoers always head into a new M. Night Shyamalan movie expecting a huge twist, but the filmmaker delivered one of his biggest surprises to date when he revealed that Split was set in the same world Unbreakable. He'd follow that with Glass, a crossover, of sorts, that divided opinions but served as an undeniably compelling sequel to his 2000 classic.

Shyamalan's career has been a fun one to follow, and ahead of Servant's return to Apple TV+ and Knock at the Cabin's release in theaters next month, he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) about a number of topics.

Among them was The Visit, a horror movie that saw two kids sent by their mother to visit the grandparents they'd never met, only to realise that the old people "caring" for them are, in fact, a couple of escaped mental patients. It's a bonkers, highly enjoyable outing from Shyamalan, and one which very nearly also ended up tying into Glass!

Asked if he's ever considered creating a "Shyamalan-verse" of sorts, the director told the trade, "If I was smart enough to have thought about it 20 some years ago, I would’ve done it, but I wasn’t smart enough to think about it."

"There was one tie-in that I almost did. It was in Glass when they all got to the mental institution," he continued. "I was going to tell a story about The Visit and how two people escaped from that same hospital...I was going to do it, but I chickened out. So I didn’t do it."

This could have worked, and as Easter Eggs/references go, we're sure Shyamalan's fans would have appreciated it.

On the other hand. it might have also created an unrealistic expectation for all his past and future projects to take place in the same world, so we can understand why the filmmaker ultimately decided to "chicken out" as he puts it.

Needless to say, we'll still be keeping a very close eye on February's Knock at the Cabin for any signs it might have some sort of link to Shyamalan's past work...

The Visit was his last okay movie.

The Visit was the first good movie he did in a long time. All he had to do was return to the thriller formula and strip things way back. It's no masterpiece, but the twist is genuinely chilling and the characters are entertaining in the classic Shyamalan sense.

imagine if he tied Signs to it all as well?

Kinda a shame but after what Glass turned into it's not so disappointing either.

I hear surprisingly good reviews of The Visit whereas I thought it was awful compared to what I imagined it being. I mean from the trailer it seemed like a genuinely creepy movie, but certain characters played of as complete cringe and it went from exciting to bland in seconds.

Split was amazing but I'd longed for the 'talked about' Unbreakable sequel for years.

Only good thing to come out of last airbender is thaf Yue’s actress ended up being cast as Asami in Legend Of Korra

Seriously doubt that was a coincidence, the movie must have brought her to mike and bryan’s attention

@dracula - she was by far the best part from that movie.

Anyway, I think it's cool she got her redemption of sorts by starring in an Avatar project I did enjoy.

And also speaking of Avatar, I really look forward to the Earthbender show.

@bkmeijer1 -

Speaking of Avatar how is it Paramount hasn't made an Avatar game, like in the open world style of Witcher or Elder Scrolls?

That would sell like crazy.

I understand games take years to make and it finally looks like Warner Bros knows The Wizarding World is ripe for video games, so one can only hope Paramount will make an Avatar game soon.

@dracula - damn that's a deep cut I didn't know. I'm so hyped that they confirmed they are working on a new avatar series post Korra.

@BlackIceJoe - The Cameron Avatar is being made into a game.

And there are some Avatar (Airbender) games too.

Dont know if any of them are open world though. There is one open world RPG coming, but only for mobile gaming.

@dracula - I'm guessing yet another decade. We had a show in the 2000s, then the 2010s, and now the 2020s, so maybe in the 2030s? Means I had a show in my childhood, my teens, and now in adulthood now that I think about it.

And I think it'll indeed the last in the cycle, as that's probably when the Avatar universe's tech has caught up to the level of ours.

@BlackIceJoe - an Avatar open world RPG would be so damn great. I'd play the hell out of that.

Just wonder in what Avatar's era should it take place? I like the Ancient China-inspired world from TLOU, but I think the industrializing world from TLOK is better for a game.

Took a decade but that avatar franchise is finally recovering from the blow his movie dealt it

...what?

How is a story about crazy old people gonna link to a story about superheroes?

Are those old people supposed to shoot lasers out of their a$$es?

I'll always give his movies a shot after The Visit. One of the best theater experiences I've ever had.

Shyamalan trying to connect his movies to create a cinematic universe? Pfffft
Everyone knows there's only been ONE successful attempt at this!

It’d be neat if he tied SIGNS in with the UNBREAKABLE universe. Same for THE VILLAGE.

In a world full of superheroes a group of people try desperately to escape back to a “normal” lifestyle. Same with SIGNS. We know water stops the alien invasion, but what if those being gassed altered their genes and they were given powers?

Definitely a lot to work with there

@ProudPatriot76 - Signs is one of my favs, but omg was that part stupid lol. The aliens had space travel tech, but could not invent clothes but instead land butt-naked on a planet 70% covered by a substance that is leathal to them?
"Take us to your leadaahhhh it's raining! Abort invasion! Abort!"

(But apparently, it didnt rain in a single place they landed in...)

I've still yet to watch GLASS. I'm hoping if I wait long enough maybe the context of the world I'm living in will age this movie better. You know when you watch a movie and it's just okay, then you watch it 10-20 years later and enjoy it way more.
