Avengers: Doomsday: The Russo Brothers Have Finally Sold Fans On Doctor Doom As The MCU's New Big Bad

There's been some scepticism from fans about Doctor Doom taking centre stage in the next Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars, but new comments from the filmmakers are winning over the sceptics.

When the Russo Brothers were enlisted to direct 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, many fans were understandably sceptical about the duo behind Community and You, Me and Dupree taking charge of the MCU's Steve Rogers.

The filmmakers delivered one of the franchise's best movies and continued to deliver hit after hit with Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Their hiatus from the MCU has seen them find mixed success, but they're now returning for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Writing a foreword for the newly released Marvel Premier Collection edition of Time Runs Out, Joe and Anthony Russo reflected on the impact 1984's Secret Wars had on them before heaping praise on Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic's 2015 follow-up and the crucial story that led directly into it.

"Jonathan Hickman created a story that felt enormous but also incredibly personal," they wrote. "It followed a universe pushed to the edge and asked a simple question that carried real weight: What remains when everything else falls apart?"

"Our focus [when we joined the MCU] was to tell a story rooted in feeling and grounded in truth, and as our work expanded through Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame, the canvas grew, but the emotional centre stayed close," the Russos continued, adding that Hickman's work "reminded us that the heart of any epic story lives in the people trying to survive it."

"And then there is Doom. Doom is not just an adversary. He is ambition and fear woven together. In Secret Wars, he tries to hold reality in place through sheer will. He believes he can save everything if he controls enough of it," the filmmakers shared. "Hickman reveals the strain behind that effort and the human fragility beneath the armor. Even someone who can reshape existence cannot escape the emotions that define him."

"We have always been drawn to characters who walk that line. People who reach for something noble and lose themselves along the way. Sometimes, destruction does not arrive as a single blow. It arrives through decisions made in uncertainty and through fractures between people who want the same thing but cannot find their way to each other. That is its own kind of ending. It is quiet, painful and incredibly human."

Similar to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, it feels like the Russo Brothers have a strong understanding of who Doctor Doom is and what makes him tick. It seems the rumours about "Time Runs Out"—which leads directly into the Final Incursion—being a key source of inspiration were also true based on these remarks.

Later, the filmmakers made a point of saying "scale only matters when it is anchored in sincerity," adding that "Time Runs Out" and Secret Wars "[turn] the end of everything into a story about identity, hope and the cost of wanting to save something larger than yourself." Hopefully, that translates to the screen.

The response from fans on social media has been overwhelmingly positive, with even the MCU's biggest detractors getting on board with the Russos' vision.

How much Avengers: Secret Wars pulls from Hickman's Secret Wars remains to be seen, especially as the Russos are huge fans of the previous version and have repeatedly said it's their dream to adapt that. With that in mind, we'd expect them to pull ideas from both stories.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to arrive on December 17, 2027.

Incorrect. Its still my second biggest issue keeping my hype level down. The second is the cast being centered around characters no one cares about.

The Russos saying RDJ was the only one to play Doom is because they wrote the movie that way. The only reason they wrote this movie around RDJ is because they wanted him to come back.

@CreateNowSlpL8r - Totally. Casting RDJ really seemed like pure desperation. There was zero need of having him back for this role.

@marvel72 - It’s weird trying to hype up a big multi-film bad guy off camera, and then preemptively saying it worked for audiences before the film releases.

That said, I am hopeful

Nothing will justify RDJ's casting. Even if they provide an in-story explanation it will still be cheap.

They should've just recast Kang, FFS. The dude is a multiversal being in essence, there'szero reasons not to do it. I just don't get some decisions the MCU dudes make.

Its looking to me the MCU is turning this Dr Doom more into the Maker story from the comics. I kinda like it if thats how they plan to reset the MCU.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 8/20/2026, 1:50 PM
@viciousvday78 - Then why not just use the Maker and bring back Miles Teller. They have an origin movie all set-up with Fant4stic which is more than they can say for RDJ's Doom.
ObserverIO

(they should do that anyway in either Doomsday or Secret Wars, Miles Teller's Maker teamed up with Pascal's Reed would be dope)

"he (Doom) tries to hold reality in place through sheer will. He believes he can save everything if he controls enough of it,"

So, literally exactly what Tony was doing for the majority of the Infinity Saga?
Same actor. Same motivation. Different mask.

Doom isn’t the issue. He’s a great villain. The question is, was it necessary to cast RDJ as him when Mads or Cillian Murphy seem to fit the role much better on paper?
vectorsigma

Yeah, im sold with that Doom flying/landing scene in the latest trailer that it will be another installment of a Russo slop

Mashup characters in a fight scene -> pop culture references as sources of laughs -> lame villain sob story to make then "compelling" -> cameos/nostalgia -> rinse repeat.

These cycles also contain

- overusing of green screens and soundstages
- no background people because they cant direct sh*t
- actors not being together on scenes that take away the gravitas of the events

Pathetic

Sounds good!!.

Them stating that they are attracted to characters who start out as something noble and lose themselves along the way is interesting and does describe Doom from the comics to an extent imo…

However MCU wise , given it’s been stated that this Victor was kind & caring before he lost everything that he cared about and became broken and seemingly genuine friends with Reed & the others that I can very much see him having the same goal to save the multiverse but his method is to have him control it while the others think that’s just too much power for one man to have.

Obviously there seems to be the rumored revenge angle there aswell against Steve for causing the incursion by going back in time to be with Peggy that killed his family but I feel the more interesting motive is him genuinely believing he’s the only one that can stop what’s coming because that to me is Doom which is ego personified!!.

Also given that they state fractures can be created by people wanting the same thing but can’t find a way to meet in the middle essentially , I wonder if the likes of Strange & others who are rumored might have willingly joined Victor in the film because they believe he’s the only one that can stop what’s coming is coming which would be fascinating imo.

It's obvious he was a random new option after Kang. They'll never admit it. Thanos had an army in Avengers, ordered Ronan to get the purple gem, then decided he'd do it for himself.

All Doom has is one after credit scene in the 15TH thing after Endgame. They used their lifeline and gave RDJ another 100m

Also that after credit scene was changed at the last second. It was supposed to be the Fantastic Four ship coming into this current reality while the Thunderbirds or New Avengers look upon

@Matchesz - I remember the rumors about a Doom credits scene at the end of Wakanda Forever and that it didn't work out because they wanted Adam Driver and couldn't get him.

That would have been a good start. And Driver would've been way better than RDJ.

I trust the Russos. Pivoting from Kang was costly, but if anyone can pick up the pieces and merge the MCU back together its the Russo brothers. I'm looking forward to it.
