"You can be my wingman anytime." Well, it looks like the time has come. With production on the Top Gun sequel in flight, we're now receiving word that Val Kilmer will be returning for the sequel and will star opposite Tom Cruise.
In the first film, Kilmer played the dashingly handsome aviator Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, the main rival to Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell at the United States Navy's Top Gun school at NAS Miramar. Of course, it's amazing what magic a little beach volleyball and an adrenaline-inducing hostile engagement with MiGs can do because, by the end of the film, the two were buddies.
It's unclear what sort of role Kilmer's "Iceman" will have in the sequel, or how big it will be, as not much is known about the actual plot of Top Gun: Maverick. From what's been said, the sequel to Tony Scott's 1986 action blockbuster (or bromantic drama depending on how you look at it) will see "Maverick" as a mentor to a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots. Perhaps "Iceman" will also be an instructor at the school? After all, someone has to keep the dangerous "Maverick" in check.
Top Gun: Maverick is being directed by Joseph Kosinski with a script by Eric Warren Singer, Peter Craig and Justin Marks. It's slated to fly into theaters July 12, 2019, which is a perfect time to play some beach volleyball.
