The first set photos from George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa, have been shared online (via SFFGazette.com) and they reveal a new look at a completely unrecognisable Chris Hemsworth. With a red beard and long red hair, along with a prosthetic nose, the actor looks a far cry from the Marvel Cinematic Universe's God of Thunder!

It now appears Hemsworth is almost certainly playing Immortan Joe, albeit a version who has yet to transform into the monstrous being we've seen in the past.

Some surprise additions to the movie were also spotted on set, as the Thor: Love and Thunder star's wife Elsa Pataky, their twin sons Tristan and Sasha, daughter India Rose, and Chris' father Craig Hemsworth, will all have roles in Furiosa. How key they will be to the story remains to be seen, but they certainly seem to be having fun in this post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Angus Sampson, who played The Organic Mechanic in Mad Max: Fury Road, was also spotted, as was new addition Ian Roberts. Alongside them were a bunch of extras and vehicles, all decked out in the sort of costumes you'd expect from this franchise (which has thus far comprised of Mad Max (1979), The Road Warrior (1981), Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and Fury Road).

"As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus," reads a recently released synopsis. "Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home."

Cameras are obviously now rolling on Furiosa, and it's currently set to be released in theaters on May 24, 2024.

He looks like a sexier version of Mike Myers in The Love Guru.

He’s not playing Joe, he’s playing the leader of a bike gang that rivals Joe.

The timeline doesn't make any sense. Max was born before the collapse of society, when the world had still cops and lawyers and journalists. He had a wife and a kid and a house. The apocalypse happened when he drove off into the desert. I'd say he was still in his mid-30s at the start of 'Fury Road'. Maybe 40. Furiosa is about his age. Maybe a little older. Yet she doesn't remember anything about how the world used to be, before her snatching from the 'Green Place of Many Mothers'. In fact everyone act like the end of the world happened like 100 years ago. The Mad Max movies aren't so much a coherent timeline anyway.

@Yuhio - Honestly, Fury Road feels like its own thing. It's hard to think of it as the fourth adventure after Thunderdome. FR feels more like when Hitchcock would remake his silent films with big Hollywood budgets and movie stars behind him now.

@Yuhio - That's one of the many reasons I wasn't too high on this one. It was supposed to be Gibson as a slightly older Max, but with the movie going through so many delays and MG becoming persona non grata in Hollywood, they did this.

Hardy is an alright actor but Max Rockatansky, he is not. MG made the role with his swagger, his voice and the ability to emote. I'm pretty sure this is why Hardy was bound and gagged for so much of the film.

It could have been alright if you consider it a parallel story in the universe, but playing it as a direct sequel with the inconsistencies let all the air out of it for me.

@Yuhio - I kinda assumed it was a reboot and didn't think too much about it. Especially with his car getting ruined again.

Or we should subscribe to the theory that Hardy's Max is actually the feral kid from Road Warrior, but let's not do that.

@DalekCraigWasson - And yet it's an official, canon sequel to 'Beyond Thunderdome'. There is a flashback of Toecutter's eyes popping out as he is about to get crushed by the truck in Mad Max 1. And Max has long hair just like in Mad Max 3. There's even a comic book where he rebuilt the V8 Interceptor (despite the car being totally destroyed in Mad Max 2). But I agree 'Fury Road' feels like a reboot.

@bkmeijer1 - if it’sa reboot, I always thought it’d be funny if we find out the apocalypse only happened in Australia and the rest of the world is just confused on what’s going on over there

@ShimmyShimmyYA - maybe it has indeed already happened there and we just don't know it yet
