For the second week in a row, Tom Cruise is the king of the box office as Mission: Impossible - Fallout is on-course to top both Christopher Robin and The Spy Who Dumped Me to retain its spot at #1.

For the second consecutive week, Tom Cruise reigns supreme as his critically acclaimed action blockbuster, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, races toward an exceptionally strong $35 million sophomore weekend and a stellar 43% hold, which should be more than good enough to retain its crown atop the box office as it closes in on $123.3 million domestically. It's also currently pacing 14% ahead of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation at the same point in its stateside release cycle.

Internationally, Fallout has earned over $141.9 million and is currently pacing 22% ahead of Rogue Nation at the same point in its overseas release cycle. Overall, the Chris McQuarrie-helmed sequel has grossed over $231.4 million to date and is currently on track to top $125 million domestically, $200 million internationally and over $300 million worldwide by the end of business tomorrow. 

It opened in another twenty foreign markets this weekend, including Japan, France, and Australia, and will open in Estonia and Poland next weekend, Lithuania the following weekend, Italy on August 29, Greece on August 30, and finally, in China on August 31 where it is expected to have a massive run through September.

Variety reports that the film may need to hit at least $560 million, possibly $650 million, to be deemed a hit on its reported $178 million production budget and with its estimated $150 million promotional and distribution costs, but fortunately, the sixth Mission is widely expected to surpass those numbers with relative ease as it targets a finish well over the $700 million mark, potentially nearing $750 million when all is said and done. Cruise, who is the only one to have gross points, and producer J.J. Abrams stand to benefit the most from its profits as they are both contracted to receive a sizable percentage of the film's final grosses. 

As for the rest of the competition, Disney's Christopher Robin, which stars Ewan McGregor, Hayley Atwell, and Winnie the Pooh, will open slightly softer than initially projected with approximately $27 million. Meanwhile, Lionsgate's action/comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me, which stars Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon, will open in third with approximately $12.4 million.

The best intentions often come back to haunt you. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. You can't out run Tom Cruise, he's too damn fast!!! But in all seriousness, I'm not surprised that a movie as phenomenal as Fallout remains at the top spot. And it doesn't face much competition for the rest of the month. Cruise is just an unstoppable daredevil.

@BoyWonder - haha. Well if we are talking about the 6th film in a franchise, The Avengers was the 6th film for the MCU and that was the best Marvel film at that point.

@BoyWonder - its the 6th film. I still rank MI3 as the best, then Rogue Nation and Fallout are tied for my second fave. MI2 is garbage, all are great outside of that second movie.

Easily the best one in the MI franchise - and one that will be very, very hard to top. I can see it ending up amongst my favorite movies of the year. So [frick]ing entertaining. Its success is very satisfying. Epic from beginning to end.

Haven't seen MI yet, waiting to see it with my dad.
However I quite enjoyed Christopher Robin and got a tad choked up, although I wish it wasn't as goofy (I was expecting something more akin to Where the Wild Things Are).
