Tom Cruise's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 8 Moves To Summer 2025; Will Be Retitled Prior To Release

Due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, Paramount has shifted around a number of upcoming titles, including Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two, A Quiet Place: Day One, and IF.

While it's been somewhat expected due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, Paramount has finally decided to adjust its upcoming release calendar, which includes pushing Tom Cruise's highly anticipated Mission: Impossible 8 from next summer to Memorial Day 2025.

Mission: Impossible 8 (formerly titled Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two) is now slated to open on May 23, 2025, and has been confirmed to receive an exclusive three-week run in IMAX, which should certainly help its box office receipts.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One grossed over $567.5 million worldwide ($172.1M domestic; $395.4M foreign) this past summer, but was only able to play in IMAX for one week due to Universal's Oppenheimer opening the following week. Fortunately, however, it looks like Paramount is being proactive with the sequel and making sure its biggest upcoming film gets as much play on premium screens as it can.

Additionally, as alluded to above, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two will be retitled prior to its release in 2025, but will still pick up immediately after the events of Dead Reckoning Part One. As for what the new title could be, expect an announcement on that front sometime over the next six to twelve months, possibly even as early as next year's CinemaCon.

In addition to moving M:I 8, Paramount has also delayed the upcoming horror prequel A Quiet Place: Day One from March to June 28, 2024, and an untitled SpongeBob SquarePants film from Spring 2025 to December 19, 2025. Meanwhile, John Krasinski's IF, an upcoming fantasy-comedy starring Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds, moves up one week to May 17, 2024.

In our review of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, we said, "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is the undisputed blockbuster movie event of the summer! Tom Cruise delivers yet another action movie masterpiece, packed with jaw-dropping spectacle, pulse-pounding action, heartfelt emotion, awe-inspiring performances, and an exhilarating chemistry opposite new leading lady Hayley Atwell that’ll have you begging for more."

In addition to Tom Cruise (Ethan Hunt), the cast features Hayley Atwell (Grace), Ving Rhames (Luther Stickell), Simon Pegg (Benji Dunn), Rebecca Ferguson (Ilsa Faust), Vanessa Kirby (Alanna Mitsopolis/White Widow), Esai Morales (Gabriel), Pom Klementieff (Paris), Mariela Garriga (Marie), Henry Czerny (Eugene Kittridge), Shea Whigham (Jasper Briggs), Greg Tarzan Davis (Degas), Charles Parnell, Frederick Schmidt (Zola Mitsopolis), Cary Elwes (Denlinger), Mark Gatiss, Indira Varma, and Rob Delaney.

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan's past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One lights the fuse in theaters on July 12, with the follow-up, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two, set to arrive next year on June 28, 2024.

@S8R8M - I've been joking that they revealed mission impossible 8 as the last movie because one of the stunts finally killed cruise.

It'll probably be Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning.

E.g. Dropping the part 2 from the title

This. The example used the other day in my gifstory. MI has been getting better with time, yet MARVEL has this notion that you can't go further than three films per character without pussying up the place & throwing preteen humor like piss-mixed chlorine at a pool party! Learn!!!

Might get hated for this, but I thought DR Pt.1 was the weakest since 2. A step down from GP, RN, and Fallout.

@MCUKnight11 - it was an interesting setup. I gotta see the follow through before I give it the final verdict.

@MCUKnight11 - it had a lot of the flaws of a “part 1 “ film. It felt like a lot of setup and felt like half a movies in a lot of ways.

I still really enjoyed it

@MCUKnight11 - Nah, it’s fair enough to say. Especially after Fallout, well, it was a tough act to follow. There is plenty to critique. And even just action-wise, it is surprisingly light. I still liked it quite a good bit, but it’s a faulted film.

@MCUKnight11 - definitely a step down but it’s also difficult to say since part two might wrap everything up super nicely.

Fallout is the best film of the franchise if you ask me so this was a noticeable dip in quality.

@MCUKnight11 - lmao not just you, in fact seems to be the popular opinion on here lately, in case you haven’t noticed.

Imo it was better than the majority of MI entries, including fallout.

That being said, this retitle is kinda hilarious, and I think we have to see part two before either of us can cast final judgment on part one.

bkmeijer1 - 10/24/2023, 2:02 AM
@MCUKnight11 - I wouldn't call it weak, as it's still a superior movie to many if others in many ways. But yeah, the last few entries were still better
HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 10/24/2023, 5:40 AM
@MCUKnight11 - It was, so much was off about that film, the main villain was as lifeless as the AI villain. Killing off the new love interest felt so unearned and pointless after building her up in the previous films. She barely gets any lines and is then given an overly dramatic and drawn out death that just felt empty. I'd blame the writing because everyone else from the previous film returned, except for this new writer but even then, the direction is so off and I'm not just talking about some of the obvious green screen because they couldn't shoot all the actors in one room together, I'm talking the goofy shit like if ever try watching it again, pay attention to how often then pull out that key or hold objects in general. They hold it up towards the camera thats so out of line with their own sight that it looks like a damn pepsi commercial. Fallout was great but I don't care of reckoning gets a sequel, not if it's the same behind the scenes people coming back. Completely hated watching it.

@MCUKnight11 -

MI ranking ( favorite to least)

1. Rogue Nation
2. Fallout
3. Dead Reckoning Pt 1/Ghost Protocol
4.Mission Impossible 3
5. Mission Impossible
6.Mission Impossible 2

Origame

@MCUKnight11 - I get that, but at the same time it IS a part 1.
TheVisionary25

@Polaris - I do agree

I get why they killed Ilsa but I still didn’t like it.
Polaris
Polaris - 10/24/2023, 10:32 AM
@TheVisionary25 - I don't get it. If the director didn't had anything interesting for her to do and didn't want her to become just a love interest as he said, this was the absolute worst solution. Now she's just a fridged love interest, replaced in the same movie. It was cliche and lazy.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/24/2023, 11:12 AM
@Polaris - it does “raise the stakes” a bit more and dies mirror Ethan & Gabriel’s past relationship which also involved the death of another woman Ethan seemed to care about but yeah , I get yah.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 10/23/2023, 11:18 PM
I think both the date shift and the re-title make sense. Part One didn’t have the impact they wanted; they need time either way to let it sit with folks and gain more of an audience, as well as taking the time to build up the 8th and final Ethan Hunt film.

This was not a good summer for Tom cruise. Dead reckoning fell short of expectations and got exposed trying to bend SAG rules to be able to promote Dead reckoning.

bobevanz - 10/23/2023, 11:31 PM
I predict the actor strike goes on through the holidays, and thus why they'll push it back. Tom Cruise was mad because he couldn't promote part 1 because the strike happened shortly after the premiere lol

Ughhhhhhhhh

I liked Dead Reckoning but I won’t lie: it’s easily the weakest of the last few for sure. Pretty dumb that it’ll be a part one of one now too lol

Also; the decision to kill off Ilsa Faust was beyond stupid.

You might wanna edit the ending of this, shouldn't it be after the events of Dead Reckoning Part "ONE"? 🤨
