RED ONE Photos Show SPIDER-MAN Star J.K. Simmons Is Still Jacked, This Time To Play Santa Claus

Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson has shared a new look at his and Chris Evans' upcoming holiday action-comedy, with the spotlight put on a jacked J.K. Simmons (Justice League, Spider-Man: No Way Home).

Dwayne Johnson (Black Adam) and Chris Evans (Avengers: Endgame) are teaming up for a new holiday-themed action movie, Red One, and shooting continues after kicking off in Boston last month. Around the time that news broke, we also learned that J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man: No Way Home) and Bonnie Hunt (Zootopia+) will play Santa and Mrs. Claus.

This weekend, The Rock has dropped another round of photos from the project (via ActioNewz.com), showcasing himself and Simmons' pumping iron...at the North Pole!

"Ladies, gentlemen [and] children of all ages...the coolest, strongest, kindest, most bad ass, most loving [and] most OG Santa Claus of all time," Johnson says in the Instagram post below.

"Brought to life by Academy Award winner, J.K. Simmons who worked his ass off for months to step into this iconic role in amazing shape for our Christmas franchise film, Red One," he continues. "We’re having a BLAST and so will you and your families when you see our movie!"

Simmons previously broke the internet after sharing a training photo when he was playing Commissioner Gordon in Justice League. Fans were blown away to see how ripped the actor is, and now he's working alongside The Rock, it's apparent Simmons isn't letting his training slide for an action movie that will see him deliver an unexpected new spin on Santa Claus.

Previously described as a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre, specific story details remain under wraps.

Johnson, Evans, Simmons, and Hunt lead a cast which also includes Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and Wesley Kimmel. Johnson will reteam with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle director Jake Kasdan for Red One, while Fast & Furious veteran Chris Morgan penned the screenplay.

Red One is expected to premiere on Prime Video next year, no doubt right in time for Christmas.

DWAYNE: "The fans asked for it, and so I brought Henry Cavill back as Superman. No one else could achieve this feat. I'm also training JK as he prepares to return as Jim Gordon. This will be the most badass Gordon you've ever seen! Because the fans continue to beg me for more, I am also getting Michael Keaton back in the batsuit! We have also secured Lynda Carter to return as Wonder Woman! And because I love you all, expect John Wesley Shipp as the Flash!! Get ready for Black Adam 2: Black Adam Harder"

"Christmas franchise film". So because Black Adam wasn't the hit that Dwayne hoped for is he now going to build a movie franchise around the holidays?
StSteven
StSteven - 12/11/2022, 4:21 PM
@bcom - Yeah that was my first thought as well. Actually it was my second thought. My first thought was when I was read that Chris Evans stars in this as well and thought “Well at least they are trying to “flop-proof” this by not relying solely on Dwayne to be the draw”. I mean, sure it still could just the same as most movies, but the star-power they have in addition to Dwayne makes that seem pretty unlikely.
bcom
bcom - 12/11/2022, 4:47 PM
@StSteven - I don't think Dwayne is the box office drawcard that he used to be. Since his involvement in the F&F franchise he's probably had more misses than hits. It's probably why he tried to steal the F&F's thunder by giving his character, Hobbs, his own co-leading movie.

I don't know, the way he talks and writes about movies it seems clear to me that he sees them purely as money making ventures rather than making movies that have heart and soul that connect with audiences. He claims that Black Adam was his passion project but it didn't feel like it had an ounce of passion in it.

I used to like the guy but his movies now feel like they're trying to hit metric markers rather than entertain audiences.
StSteven
StSteven - 12/11/2022, 8:43 PM
@bcom - Couldn't agree with you more on every point. It's almost like he's regressing to his wrestling days where they would hype themselves publicly in order to build excitement for whatever match was that they had coming up. I mean, let's step away from the MCU for a sec (just so that I don't get labeled as an MCU fanboy): when Brad Pitt has a new movie coming out, or Daniel Craig, or countless others, do they over-hype it the way that Dwayne does? Like when "Bullet Train" came out did we hear Brad Pitt get out and say "This is going to redefine the "assassins on a bullet train" genre"?. Or even though Craig's Bond run actually DID redefine Bond for a new generation, did we ever see Daniel hyping it up as "This is going to change everything you ever knew about the Bond Universe" or some such rubbish?

I'm not necessarily trying to rag on Dwayne here so much as people who create their own untrue narrative of success and then do everything that they can to make it a reality. Remember, Dwayne has been advertising "BA" as the "new hierarchy of power" in the DCEU (at the time) and blah blah blah. And what happened? He was shut down. And now he's trying to deny the results of that election and - oops,, sorry, got sidetracked there - deny the results of the BO AND what WB has planned moving forward.

So, yeah, like you, I used to like the guy but if he continues on this track of unrealistically hyping his accomplishments and future projects it's going to make me considerably less likely to watch anything he does in the future. And this is coming from someone who actually paid the D+ uncharge to watch "Jungle Cruise" in my home theater.

He's actually played Santa before in a movie called, Klaus. It's an animated movie that tells a fictional origin of Christmas and it's actually really good.
