ROAD HOUSE: Jake Gyllenhaal Takes On Conor McGregor In Badass New Trailer; Doug Liman To Boycott Premiere

The official trailer for Doug Liman's Road House has arrived and it's insanely badass as Spider-Man: Far From Home star Jake Gyllenhaal kicks all kind of ass and squares off with Conor McGregor!

Prime Video has released the official trailer for Doug Liman's upcoming actioner Road House, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From HomeSouthpawPrisoners) in the lead role and it looks to be one of the Academy Award-nominated actor's most badass roles to date as the trailer showcases him kicking plenty of ass and squaring off against UFC megastar Conor McGregor!

The film's synopsis reads, "In this adrenaline-fueled reimagining of the 80s cult classic, ex-UFC fighter Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, only to discover that this paradise is not all it seems."

Road House will host its world premiere at the SXSW 2024 Film & TV Festival next month, and while, a few stars will likely be in attendance, it's been confirmed that one big name will absolutely not be attending: director Doug Liman.

In a guest column on Deadline yesterday, the acclaimed director announced his plans to boycott the film's premiere due to Prime Video not granting his film a theatrical release and sending it straight to streaming, despite the film testing higher than any of his previous releases.

He explains at length, "When Road House opens the SXSW film festival, I won’t be attending. The movie is fantastic, maybe my best, and I’m sure it will bring the house down and possibly have the audience dancing in their seats during the end credits. But I will not be there.

My plan had been to silently protest Amazon’s decision to stream a movie so clearly made for the big screen. But Amazon is hurting way more than just me and my film. If I don’t speak up about Amazon, who will? So here we go.

When Amazon bought MGM, one of the few remaining studios making big commercial films for theatrical release (movies like Bond, Creed) they announced that they would put a billion dollars into theatrical motion pictures, releasing at least 12 a year. They touted it as “the largest commitment to cinemas by an internet company.” I can tell you what they then did to me and my film Road House, which is the opposite of what they promised when they took over MGM.

The facts: I signed up to make a theatrical motion picture for MGM. Amazon bought MGM. Amazon said make a great film and we will see what happens. I made a great film.

We made Road House a “smash hit” – Amazon’s words not mine, btw. Road House tested higher than my biggest box office hit, Mr. and Mrs Smith. It tested higher than Bourne Identity, which spawned four sequels. I’m told the press response has been Amazon’s best since they bought MGM. Road House has a strong tie-in to the UFC, which has a rabid and loyal fan base that has spawned over 1.5 billion social media impressions for the film, and marketing hasn’t even started yet. The action is ground-breaking. And Jake Gyllenhaal gives a career-defining performance in a role he was born to play. Audiences will want to see UFC mega-star Conor McGregor take his debut swing at Jake on the big screen. The reality is there’s nothing quite so fun as a good bar fight.

What else could I have delivered to the studio? Nothing, it turns out. Because contrary to their public statements, Amazon has no interest in supporting cinemas. Amazon will exclusively stream Road House on Amazon’s Prime. Amazon asked me and the film community to trust them and their public statements about supporting cinemas, and then they turned around and are using Road House to sell plumbing fixtures." -- Read more at Deadline.

In addition to Jake Gyllenhaal, the supporting cast consists of Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Joaquim de Almeida, Conor McGregor, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, B.K. Cannon, Beau Knapp, Darren Barnet, Dominique Columbus, Bob Menery, Catfish Jean, Kevin Carroll, Travis Van Winkle, and Hannah Lanier.

Road House starts streaming, exclusively on Prime Video, on March 21!

Looks like it might wind up being one of those so bad it's good action flicks, kinda like the OG Roadhouse so at least it has that going for it.

@UniqNo - Well, looks like he's playing an asshole that the viewers are supposed to hate and gets beaten by the hero.
So you should enjoy this.

@UniqNo - Same here. His appearance in the trailer was a low point. His acting looks atrocious. He's also just a terrible human, so it makes me not want to watch this. But, since it will be on streaming there is a good chance I will.

This is probably just me but I think that looks fun…

One of the writers of The Nice Guys being behind this aswell as Doug Liman (who can be hit or miss) makes me interested to check it out!!.

Hell of an eclectic cast too!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Nice Guys was a great movie. It doesn't really have anything memorable storywise, but it's a lotta fun. Wish Crowe and Gosling are in more stuff together

The trailer actually looks dope - fun fighty movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, just like the original. Love that Liman is open about why he is boycotting - cinema experience aside, Amazon is an awful company and it's about time someone with a voice actually says something. Granted he's only speaking out after he was burned by them, but I'll take it.

I bought a copy of Road House at Wal-Mart in 2017. I have not even taken the plastic off. One day, I will do so and watch the film.

I may not be excited for a remake of this movie, but this does look way better than anything they could’ve done with Rhonda Rousey when they were talking about remaking it with her. Thank God that never happened.🤣🤣🤣

@MyCoolYoung - it does. Kinda reminds me off Disney just dumps Pixar movies on D+ these days.

I'm not watching either, but I do think it sucks Liman or Pixar isn't given the opportunity to shine.

@MyCoolYoung - even Netflix does limited releases. If the biggest streamer can, than so can Amazon

@MyCoolYoung - Amazon suck. They are unethical, greedy con-artists. I bought Christmas presents from Amazon and they still haven't come. Maybe because I'm not a Prime customer, lol. And the lesson is, give the evil corporation more money and eat all their poisonous cookies!

I feel you, Doug Liman.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 1/26/2024, 1:40 PM
@bkmeijer1 - @ObserverIO corporate greed is just crazy. We’re talking about the director of the movie out in the open pleading for this. Streaming is so convenient but it’s ruining a lot

@ObserverIO -
My girlfriend has Prime Video where she pays a subscription fee & still has to pay to watch a movie...!
Isn't the reason why you pay the fee so you DON'T have to pay to see the movie?
I just don't understand that...!☮🤷‍♂️

Poor Liman, but he should have known better. He made a deal with probably the worse devil in the industry. Who is a trillion dollar company that will begin to charge their subscribers who already pay 100 bucks a year for their services. But want an additional 5-10 bucks to charge for commercials.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/25/2024, 4:51 PM
@Mrnorth1921 - Prime is that expensive where you live? I only pay fifty bucks a year. That's not only the cheapest streaming service, but a lot of shipping benefits as well
