Prime Video has released the first trailer (via ActionNewz.com) for Samaritan, the upcoming superhero movie starring Sylvester Stallone. Showcasing the legendary actor as a retired vigilante who comes out of the shadows to once again fight evil, we get an in-depth look at what led to this hero going into hiding and learn exactly what he's capable of.
There has been some speculation about Samaritan being "dumped" on streaming after originally being eyed for a theatrical release, but this doesn't look like the usual B-movie fare we see head down that route. In fact, this looks like a great time, and we're intrigued to check it out.
After all, we always enjoy seeing an original take on a superhero character, and Samaritan feels akin to the sort of action movies that put Stallone on the map when he was at the height of his action star career. Of course, he's also no stranger to the superhero genre after lead roles in Judge Dredd, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and The Suicide Squad!
"I love action films that also have heart. I wanted to be involved with Samaritan because this story has many layers that I think people can relate to," Stallone previously said about the movie's shift to streaming. "It’s something of a morality tale that is also very exciting to watch. We are thrilled that this will be seen globally on Prime Video where my fans and all audiences can enjoy it together around the world."
In Samaritan, thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary (Javon "Wanna" Walton) suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbour Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone) is actually a legend hiding in plain sight. Twenty years ago, Granite City’s super-powered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis.
Most believe Samaritan perished in the fire, but some in the city, like Sam, have hope that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos, Sam makes it his mission to coax his neighbour out of hiding to save the city from ruin.
Directed by Julius Avery from a script by Bragi F. Schut, Samaritan also stars Pilou Asbæk, Dascha Polanco, and Moises Arias. The movie arrives on Prime Video on August 26!
