SHERLOCK HOLMES Director Guy Ritchie Says "The Ball's In [Robert Downey Jr.'s Court" With Third Movie

There have been rumblings about Sherlock Holmes 3 for some time now, but according to director Guy Ritchie, he's waiting to hear back from star Robert Downey Jr. about his future plans for the property.

Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, was released in 2009. A sequel followed two years later with 2011's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, but the franchise has remained on the shelf ever since. Downey was obviously busy with his MCU commitments, but if he could spare the time to make a movie like Dolittle, why not Sherlock Holmes 3?

A few years ago, it seemed like the project was starting to take shape, with Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman) stepping in to replace Guy Ritchie. That seemed like a positive update, but the pandemic resulted in multiple delays and Fletcher is no longer thought to be working on the threequel.

Not too long ago, we heard that at least two TV shows set in this "Sherlock Holmes Universe" are being developed by HBO Max, with Downey producing.

During an interview with Collider (via ActioNewz.com), Ritchie didn't comment on those but was asked where things stand with the big screen franchise, confirming its future lies in the former Iron Man’s hands.

“Well, honestly, I left this up to Robert [Downey Jr.]. So Robert wanted to be in charge of this,” the director of the first two movies explains. “The ball's in his court, so he's in charge of the script, he's in charge of the whole thing. I've moonwalked out of that until there's a time for me to get involved.”

Something tells us this one is still a long way from becoming a reality, and with over a decade having passed since the last movie, it feels like interest has waned. Still, there’s definitely potential with a revival of some sort, especially if the original cast returns.

Sherlock Holmes earned $524 million at the worldwide box office, while the sequel ended up making $543 million. It was a successful franchise, but whether the interest is still going to be there after all these years obviously remains to be seen.

Sherlock Holmes 3 doesn't currently have a release date, but keep checking ActioNewz.com for the latest updates.

I enjoyed the first two movies but it seems RDJ knows his current market worth and the studio is actually waiting for that to cool down.

@dracula - There were some cool scenes in the second one, but I didn't like it near as much as the first one.

What did you not like about it?

@LSHF - basically did what the Pirate sequels did, over do it on what people liked about the leads and their quirkiness, even adding in similar characters to include more of it.

The discarding of Irene Alder

Plot wasnt anything special

Didnt do anything to follow up on what was actually set up for Moriarty in the first movie, outside of him just being the villain

@dracula - I hadn't considered the similarities between that and the Pirate sequels.

I hated what they did to her character.

I hadn't thought about the Moriarty point, either.

Thanks for your reply.

Second was good but I still think the first is stronger. Would love to see RDJ on screen with Law again.

Would love to see another one.

RDJ and Jude Law have some of the best onscreen buddy cop chemistry I’ve ever seen!
Love those two together!

If they can’t write a script as good as the second then maybe they should leave it there.
Game of Shadows is one of my favorite movies,‘it’s so entertaining and RDJ is great in the role.

Ritchie’s career is kind of in a weird place right now. He used to be known for making really striking, auteur films with a unique style. Snatch, Lock Stock, and RockNRolla are so special.

But for the last ten years, he’s just become a director-for-hire. He made that really bland Aladdin movie a couple years back, a similarly forgettable King Arthur movie, and a string of low-ish budget action movies starring Jason Statham that all feel like they were made for Redbox.

Downey, meanwhile, seems to be a little pickier about the movies he appears in. The guy is loaded, and doesn’t have to appear in anything for a paycheck anymore (which those Sherlock movies 100% felt like).

Seeing as how it's his only successful franchise outside of the MCU I'd say go for it. (Not counting the soul brother Sgt Lincoln Osiris)

The first 2 movies were good, but if RDJ hasn't gotten up the interest to do a 3rd by now, he probably never will.
