Sony Pictures Acquires Rights to Assassin's Creed Film Adaptation!

After the video game publisher and developer announced that they are trying to find a studio for a big screen adaptation, there were couple of offers. Now, it seems that Sony has acquired rights to Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed...

I am a big fan of Assassin's Creed games. First one was not the best one out there, but it definitely had a lot of potential. And Ubisoft thought so too. They made a second game which was just amazing. Then third one came out, also great, and now a fourth game in the franchise will be released next month. It's also worth mentioning that not only were the games a critical success but also financial. With that, Ubisoft Motion Pictures has been trying to find a studio for a film adaptation, and according to Variety, Sony Pictures is the one that acquired rights:

"Studio is in final negotiations to adapt and distribute the bigscreen version of the historical actioner, landing the film rights in a bidding war after Ubisoft started shopping the property around Hollywood over the last several months. Studios, including Universal, also were vying for the project."

This makes Assassin's Creed the third game Sony is working on, with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and inFAMOUS in development. Last three games in Assassin's Creed series have been revolving around Desmond Miles, a descendant of both Altaïr and Ezio Auditore da Firenze. After he is put in a machine called "Animus" he experiences the memories of Ezio and Altaïr.

The latest game in the franchise, Assassin's Creed: Revelations will be released on November 15.

It's also an Xbox game... :P

Random question, you think they could make this a quality movie with that "true to the source" thing while it being PG-13?

I think it'd be tough to be a box office success with it being R.

If they make it as good as Prince of Persia was, it'll be at least decent. But they better bring their A game.

@Shaman I actually erally enjoyed Prince of Persia. It wasn't great but was entertaining. I watched that this weekend and thought that it had the feel of AC.

god i hope its better than prince of persia - my only real issue with that movie was i felt the sword fighting was lacking...also the british accents were weird

This could be great. Problem in the past was there weren't many games worthy of a film. The POP film shows they're making progress with the genre of game movies. Infamous, Uncharted, and especially Assassins Creed could make for great films given a crew who are both talented and respectful of the source material.

Nice! This game is pretty much tailor made for the big screen. Expect some changes to the mythology though to make it easier to keep track of.

Brashlight- Haha! I'd be surprised if you actually could wait for it. Or maybe "concerned" would be a better word for it LOL

ksommer- It definitely was a fun film. I had no expectations going into it on account of most videogame films sucking. But i enjoyed it as much as i did the first Resident Evil film. Neither are great, but both were fun. I hope AC is at least as good as those.

It could be really good. I would love to see Someone like Chris Pine, Matt Damon, or Jake Gyllenhaal Play Desmond Miles and when in action have Scott Adkins and David Belle play Ezio & Altair in action. That would be awesome!

Paul Greengrass, Doug Liman, Kevin Hall Reynolds, Pierre Morel or even Louis Leterrier for Director!

Any of them could be awesome. They know how to deliver plot and action in even quantities. Plus they can pull of the back and forth quite well.

I thought Ubisoft was planing to have their own movie company, like Marvel did.
I just hope SONY hire somebody good to write and direct it, and stay true to the original story, we don't need a video game movie with a PG-13, the original games had "Mature" classification If I am not wrong, so we don't need PG13

They better bring their A-game if they're going make this film. If it's better than Prince of Persia, then I'll definitely watch it. I haven't really played any of the games, but from what I saw, it's fragging awesome!! And if they even think about making PG-13, then it'll suck. They must stick close to the video games. Hell, the video games ARE the script for them. So if they follow it, then all will be a-okay. But if they decide to stray away from the games and make up their own story, then this movie will bomb. They have to find a director who will be true to the games and will follow it and make it even more excellent. And for the actor, I think it should be either Wentworth Miller or Scott Adkins as Ezio. They should have lots of action sequences in the movie, the special fx should be spot on, and the story should be epic and engaging. THAT'S how the movie should be, or at least like this.

I'm really excited for this movie, but I HOPE that Sony will stick close to the source material.

Right director and big enough budget and this could be the first decent video-game adaptation. Finding the balance between the historical and modern subplots will be key, as will introducing the convuluted millenium-spanning conspiracy theories of the game universe in a two-hour flick.

At the very least please keep Kristen Bell on board.

I have two comments:
1) Ubisoft made the 'Prince of Persia' games. The 'Sands of Time' game is beyond epic...but the movie was a painful disappointment.('Farah's boobs FTW)

2) This movie could be great, as'Prince of Persia SOT' should HAVE been- if the studio just followed the storyline in the game. But what historical time period would work best? The Crusades or Renaissance period?
Either way I got a bad feeling this will end up like the POP movie.
