SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Actress Jennifer Connelly In Talks To Join Tom Cruise In TOP GUN: MAVERICK
We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you a quick update on Top Gun: Maverick as Academy Award-winner Jennifer Connelly has entered talks to join the upcoming Tom Cruise-led sequel.
According to a new report, Jennifer Connelly may just be on the verge of taking a trip to the danger zone as Deadline has learned that the Academy Award-winning actress is in talks to star opposite Tom Cruise in the long-awaited Top Gun: Maverick. Details on her role are being kept under wraps, but Variety notes that she's believed to be playing a single mother that runs a bar near the air force base.
Cruise (Mission: Impossible - Fallout) will reprise his role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell while Val Kilmer (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) returns as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky. Connelly is the second newcomer cast in the sequel, joining Miles Teller, who landed the highly-coveted role of Goose's (Anthony Edwards) son earlier this month.
Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion; Only the Brave) will direct with a script from Peter Craig (The Town), Justin Marks (The Jungle Book), and Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle).
Production is slated to begin this coming September in San Diego. Plot details remain under heavy lock-and-key, but the film is set in the world of drone technology and will explore the end of the era of dogfighting, with Maverick making the transition to flight instructor for a whole new generation of pilots.
Connelly made the jump into the Marvel Cinematic Universe last year as Karen, the voice of Peter Parker's fancy Stark suit, in Spider-Man: Homecoming. She also portrayed Betty Ross in Ang Lee's Hulk in 2003. Her recent and more prominent credits include, but are not limited to, Alita: Battle Angel, Only The Brave, Noah, Blood Diamond, and A Beautiful Mind. She's currently in the midst of filming TNT's upcoming Snowpiercer series.
