Lionsgate has released a brand new trailer for The Birthday Party, their upcoming thriller starring Spider-Man legend Willem Dafoe as Marcos Timoleon, a tycoon with a much larger agenda who decides to throw his daughter a lavish birthday party before everything gets out of hand.

As per the synopsis, "The story is set in the late 1970s somewhere in the Mediterranean, where Marcos Timoleon, an Aristotle Onassis-like tycoon, is throwing a lavish, extravagant birthday party for Sofia, his daughter and sole heiress, on his exclusive private island. The party is a perfect excuse for various people in his life to approach him with their own agendas. But Marcos, who is used to ruthlessly controlling everything and everyone around him at whatever cost, is also secretly plotting a big decision on his daughter's behalf. Sofia, however, has come to share some important news of her own. As guests start pouring in and night falls, the party grows rowdier and more decadent, while the inevitable clash between Marcos and Sofia reaches a heartbreaking climax."

The film held its world premiere at the 78th Locarno Film Festival last year, and was acquired for distribution earlier this year.

It's been a busy few years for Dafoe, especially since reprising his iconic role as the Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. Since then, he's starred in a variety of compelling projects, including, but not limited to, The Northman, Asteroid City, Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Nosferatu, The Phoenician Scheme, and The Man in the Basement.

The 4x Academy Award-nominated actor can be seen next in Tenzing later this month and Robert Eggers' Werwulf this Christmas.

In addition to Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man; Aquaman), the supporting cast features Vic Carmen Sonne (Godland; Winter Flies), Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders; Gangs of London), Emma Suárez (Julieta; The Red Squirrel), and Carlos Cuevas (Merlí; Smiley).

Miguel Ángel Jiménez (Window to the Sea; A God in Each Lentil) directed the film, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Giorgos Karnavas and Nicos Panayotopoulos. Karnavas, Adria Mones, Erik Glijnis, Leontine Petit, and Kurban Kassam are attached as producers.

The Birthday Party starts streaming tomorrow, October 8th, exclusively on Lionsgate+ on Prime Video!

We screened it this July over here in Crete, @RohanPatel.

Worth your time if you're into the erotic thriller scene with a Mediterranean background, and a surprising narration of "Misunderstood" from Dafoe in the finale.

I appreciate that no one is going to ask what it has to do with comic book movies... we accept that the Goblin made him do it.

We've had the Greek Epic, now the Greek Tragedy.

I'd watch anything with Willem Dafoe in, apart from 'Speed 2: Cruise Control' or anything related to Aquaman. 'American Dreamz' (2006) was a stinker too.
