The Hollywood Reporter confirms that IMAX will release The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on their screens when the sequel is released on Novemeber 22nd, next year. Despite the fact that it wasn't filmed in the format, Lionsgate had no trouble selling out IMAX showings of The Hunger Games back in March, so it comes as no surprise that they will once again take advantage of the format. The best part about this news however is that director Francis Lawrence is planning to actually shoot parts of the film using IMAX cameras and the rest of the film will also be digitally remastered for the format. "We are thrilled to continue the productive partnership we enjoyed with Imax on the first installment of The Hunger Games," said Lionsgate motion picture group co-chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger in a statement released today.

I've haven't seen The Hunger Games yet... but I give power to these guys for tackling IMAX. This is good news. Stereoscopic 3D doesn't rule the land. Make Mine... IMAX!

the hunger games is a boring/average movie,the violence was good but not enough to make it a good movie.

The average filmgoer wouldn't have a clue if a film was done in IMAX or not.

"Christopher Nolan Once again influencing people."

Nolan did Apollo 13?? Star Wars: Attack of the Clone? The Matrix Sequels? Spiderman 2? Those and other films used IMAX prior to Nolan.

@Ranger

None of those directors actively protest that IMAX is the way to go. Nolan vocally speaks of it like a movement. Those films aren't entirely filmed in IMAX either. Nolan filming over an hour of IMAX for TDKR is quite revolutionary. Filming in IMAX for an ENTIRE film is next to impossible.

Great news! But still... I'm skeptic about Francis Lawrence :/

Those weren't filmed in 70mm IMAX. They were DMRs. The Dark Knight was the first. And, after Rises— people will be more knowledgable over DMRs and 70mm IMAX. Star Trek 2 will definitely benefit from that gained awareness and so will Catching Fire.

would be a good idea to get your knowledge in check before you front on nolan with his fans in earshot lol.

i love imax, ive seen all the feature films made with imax scenes in them. didnt watch tron legacy in imax though, was only rendered full screen, not shot with the cameras.

ill be at the imax for this, tdkr, star trek 2 and possibly man of steel though i doubt there is going to be any imax in that.

My comment wasn't directed to being filmed in native IMAX. It was directed to the IMAX viewing experience. Nolan didn't invent that. I watched TDK at the IMAX and the experience was no different for me than watching any other IMAX film and I would wager money that for most people they didn't notice or really care one way or the other. It's not like people are going to go to TDKR and go...wow...an hour of that film was a much better experience than the rest of it.

People go to an IMAX theaters to have an overall better quality experience in the first place. Whether it was shot in 70 mm or done with DMR, not that many people are going to know the difference or are really going to care. You either want to spend the money to see the film in the IMAX or not. People already spend the money to do so, so to me it makes little difference. I would have viewed The Avengers, the Hobbit or certain other films released this year in IMAXX regardless of how the film was shot. Films that I don't care that much about I am not going to spend the money to see in IMAX. The average film goer isn't going to be that much different regardless of the hype. There's still a lot of people who won't spend the extra money to see a film in 3D and that is a much more "in your face" difference in viewing experience.

...and I know 3D can be an annoying difference in viewing for many people as opposed to watching a regular IMAX experience, but different strokes. It's all about the content of the film for me anyway. Films that hype the visual experience have generally been a let down for me. Don't hype me on how your film was filmed...hype me on the actual film content. To each their own.

I get what you're saying. Nolan didn't invent it. Who said he did? However, his success made it a more open choice for other productions. Brad Bird did wonders with it. And I'm sure JJ Abrams will utilize it better than the rest (space scenes are going to be amazing). We will see how audiences respond.

@Ranger

How people feel about something doesn't make a difference in this sense. Is the visual quality enhanced? You bet your ass it is.

And honestly, I strongly believe you'd lie about how you feel just to spite Nolan but thats just my take on it.

Anyway, THE FIRE RISES. Nolan is one of the best modern directors today!
