IMAX Corporation and Lionsgate today announced that due to overwhelming demand, The Hunger Games will return to more than 100 IMAX® digital theatres across North America on April 27. The film will play for a one-week special return engagement through May 3.

The Hunger Games has grossed over $533 million globally since its launch on March 23, including $13.2 million generated from IMAX theatres in its original one week run.

"It's wonderful that so many fans have expressed interest in seeing The Hunger Games in the immersive IMAX format, and many of these are repeat viewers," said Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group Co-Chair Rob Friedman, adding "We're delighted that IMAX has been able to accommodate them through this special one week re-engagement."

"The Hunger Games has become a cultural phenomenon and we are thrilled to provide moviegoers with another opportunity to see this year's most successful film in IMAX,"
said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment.

The IMAX release of The Hunger Games has been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

Trying to take on The Avengers? Bold move.

neither this nor the avengers are real imax anyway. you can tell by they are only playing at imax digital cinemas and not at the proper giant 70mm film ones to see that its bullsh*t.

avengers isnt at the biggest and most popular imax screen in the UK. great plan marvel

the film itself was great though. converted imax is as fake as converted 3D.

meh, movie pas pretty cool., but the kids were so damn accurate with all their weapons I felt like I was watching crouching tiger hidden dragon. Not every spear thrown or arrow shot has to hit the absolute dead center of the target for the action to be good, or to give the audience the idea that they are good fighters or hunters. Too unbelievable.

I somewhat agree. But the characters were given heavy training, remember?

the hunger games was good but it wasn't anything special,the violence was good for the rating it had but i found the movie boring in places.

hope the sequel is better.

IMAX DMR is horrible, you're better off watching it on a normal screen. Only films that are actually shot using IMAX cameras look "crystal clear" on IMAX screens. DMR upscales normal movies to nothing near the quality of real IMAX and the result is similar to watching DVD upscaled on a 1080p hidef TV, picture looks soft as shit!

Dark Knight will show them all how its done properly!

@Ceejay

exactly, more films need to shoot on imax. i have seen every feature film partially shot with those camera, TDK and Mission impossible ghost protocol were the best. transformers 2 had some great shots but the editing was abit too frenetic (as ever) to really make the most of it. and it really draws attention to the fact that with most of the shots everything was added after.

didnt see tron legacy in imax even though parts of the film were rendered in 1.44:1 ratio like imax film, as it was shot digitally none of it was actual imax.

really looking forward to the approx 50-60 minutes of full imax in TDKR as the prologue was as crazy good as i expected it to be.

its interesting that star trek will be both shot on imax and converted to 3D. ive seen hubble imax 3D and that was pretty spectacular so hopefully they do the 3d with the imax in mind as much as possible.

people keep talking about imax in man of steel but i havent seen or read any proof of that yet.

and the only Imax DMR i think ill see is cuaron's gravity as i think that will be pretty impressive on the biggest screen possible with or without full screen imax

not enough people seem to know what imax really is an are settling for an inferior product which is a real shame.

and again more movies need to shoot with those cameras.

@doubleD

its all down to the parents in the end, the rating says its ok for 13 and up and if parents want to take their kids its on them if they think its too violent.

similar thing happend in the UK when TDK got a 12A certificate and people were complaining that their 8 year olds were scared and the BBFC who make the decisions on ratings said "we told you it for was 12 and up but u have the decision to take younger kids if you want but we do not have responsibilty for that"

parents are stupid bascially lol

@ Seabz, they're definitely not trying to take on the Avengers, they would be beyond idiotic if they did. The IMAX run ends May 3. They're just trying to squeeze as much money out of the movie as they can before their sales plummet when Avengers sweeps the board haha. It's a good strategy.

Never read any of the books, the movie was pretty cool. Pretty brutal though. Me and my brother wanted to see The Cabin in the Woods but the ticket guy wouldn't let us.

Overwhelming demand? I don't know one person even talking about this film, let alone demanding it be shown in IMAX.

This is con job by Lionsgate and IMAX to squeeze more cash from the film.
