Lanterns Creative Team On [Spoiler]'s Episode 2 Debut And Whether They'll Be The Season's "Big Bad"

The creative team and one of the stars of HBO's Lanterns have now weighed in on episode 2's major DCU debut and future plans for the character...

Lanterns episode 2, "Trust Fall," ended with Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) suiting up and taking flight to pay a visit to his old mentor Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen), who is now imprisoned in an intergalactic cell after betraying the Guardians of the Universe.

Jordan was looking for answers about the alien threat in Rushville and the presence of a Manhunter, but the manipulative villain winds up sowing the seeds of doubt in Hal's mind about his trainee John Stewart (Aaron Pierre).

“We didn’t really go into great detail with each other, but we did it by running it and running it and finding new things,” Chandler tells Entertainment Weekly. “The more and more that we did it, I found myself feeling more of a respect in that mentor-student thing because he gave me what I have, like him or not. There was almost like a father figure sitting in front of me.”

Showrunner Chris Mundy explains the decision to utilize Sinestro as the Hannibal Lecter to Jordan's Clarice, as it were, while revealing that this first season of Lanterns really doesn't have a "big bad."

We will definitely be seeing Sinestro again, and a flashback to the events that led to his villainous turn is possible, but those hoping for a jail break and a major climactic battle might be disappointed.

“We wanted him in the show just because of his place in the mythology. But by nature of the fact that we were telling a mystery more than we were telling a thriller, we don’t really have a big bad in the season. We have mysteries [where] there might be something malevolent behind them or not, and there’s a mystery of people’s identities or who did what, but it’s not ‘we’re fighting this bad guy, and he’s gonna destroy the world.’ So in this weird way, it freed us up. We could use him sparingly.”

EP Damon Lindelof felt it was important to include the GL Corps' most infamous and recognizable foe, but admits that they did consider leaving him out of this first season.

“You start from, ‘What if Sinestro isn’t in the show at all?’ And you just go, ‘Well, that feels wrong.’ Sometimes you can just let your guide be, ‘If I were watching the show and I wasn’t working on it, what’s the thing that would drive me the most nuts?’ and ‘What are the things that I expect? So once we fundamentally understood what the big emotional idea of the show was —which was that Hal was being expected to coach and train John in that kind of Training Day Denzel [Washington]-Ethan Hawke way, but he didn’t want to do it and he was being very curmudgeonly about it —it felt like there’s a very organic space for the person who trained Hal in this story.”

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

“How’s your white man?” Zoe asks. John laughs and answers the question instead of correcting it.

Hal “wanted me out the way,” he says, so “he sent me to fetch his things.”

James Gunn never fails with the weird shit. Nude aliens.....John Stewart has a weird oppressive relationship with Hal
This will loose 70% of viewership by the next episodes ike Peacemaker

@KalSonOfEl - The way John feels about oppression is a true to his character.

@KalSonOfEl - I take it you read your comics the with the same comprehension as you read my post. I never said John Stewart is canonically oppressed by Hal Jordan.

John Stewart's character has historically been shaped by themes of injustice, racism, discrimination, institutional power, responsibility, and the experience of being a Black man in America. Those themes can inform how John reacts to situations involving power and oppression.

John's sensitivity to power, injustice, and oppression is consistent with his established characterization. That doesn't mean Hal is canonically his oppressor.

@Baf - This is spot on. A quibble I have with some modern writers is them forgetting that John isn't just stoic ex U.S. military man in a different green suit.

@oldnoname - To understand John Stewart as more than just the stoic Green Lantern from Justice League, Mosaic is essential reading. I really wish they would make that a movie.

@Clintthahamster - Im a White Nationalists that KNOWS Black ppl are the Aborigines Of The Americas. We didn't kidnap them from Africa. We found them here & exported them out. And when they wake up & realize that they're not black but The American Indian they can take their lands back!

@InfinitePunches - Hal doesn't die. Remember the story went out of it's way to show us that the power ring stores a backup consciousness of Hal Jordan that is merged with the ring's native artificial intelligence. They can flex this to some sort of way to bring him back from his apparent death.

The Manhunter has turned Rushville into his fortified tower, complete with militia and alien detectors.

My theory is that William Macon is the Manhunter because his wife has found a protector in him, but for physiological reasons, he can't have sex with her. So she has sex with others with his consent. There are human needs that a Manhunter can't fulfill.
WruceBayne
WruceBayne - 8/24/2026, 10:51 AM
@Repian - I think Macon is the misdirect and Zoe is the Manhunter(I’m not trolling). I think she’s the “Villain in plain sight” character.

I like that theory a lot.
Repian
Repian - 8/24/2026, 12:03 PM
@WruceBayne - Antaan asks John, "Have you ever been deceived by someone you love?" So it's possible that a Manhunter disguised as a woman—his wife—will betray him.

It's possible that Zoe and Antaan's wife are the same Manhunter, and this is more personal than one might think.

It's weird that in this post we're censoring Sinestro, while another post on the front page has him as the thumbnail.
Repian
Repian - 8/24/2026, 10:39 AM
I think Sinestro manipulated Hal in the past. He told Hal about the Green Lantern Corps' shortcomings, the Guardians' methods, and how greater control of the sectors could bring more peace to the universe.

When someone constantly shares their point of view with you, you might start to see things the way they do.

So Hal is in danger if he listens to Sinestro again. Hal is open to manipulation once more.

Kadara - 8/24/2026, 11:46 AM
@Repian - Especially since he apparently hasn't been reporting to them what's going on. Kinda weird as he is supposed to be an intergalactic peace keeper but he seemingly doesn't trust his superiors enough to share his investigation.

MyCoolYoung - 8/24/2026, 8:33 PM
@1stDalek - yup. It just kind of makes it harder to resist the urge to wait until the a bunch of episodes are out to watch. A lot of these shows flow a whole lot better when binged

It wasn't perfect, but it's far above most of the CW stuff.

@Pathogen - If DC had allowed CW to make Diggle into a Lantern like they wanted to, that show would have looked exactly like this lol

Except they wouldn't have been allowed to curse left and right like high schoolers.

@SpaceAgent - It was pretty bad. I'll admit, I watched more Arrow than I did AoS, but that is the only time I'll admit to watching much of Arrow. Those shows werent great. I didnt really respect a superhero show until Daredevil came out
