Goodness gracious, great balls of fire!
Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick is still the king of the box office with $86 million in its second weekend, a -32% drop, which is the smallest second-weekend drop ever for a film that opened over $100 million.
The Paramount and Skydance blockbuster has now earned $291.6 million in the United States, making it Tom Cruise's highest-grossing film ever domestically, surpassing Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds ($234.3), which opened in 2005. There's now a very real possibility that Maverick could near or exceed $500 million domestic before the end of its 120-day theatrical run, an absolutely incredible performance.
Top Gun: Maverick also continues to perform exceedingly well overseas, bringing in another $81.7 million and taking its worldwide total to a stunning $548.6 million. It's now Cruise's sixth-biggest hit globally and is well on its way to possibly taking down the $787.1 million haul of Mission: Impossible - Fallout to become his biggest earner ever.
With a production budget of $172.5 million and $150 million in print and advertising, the film's reported break-even number was approximately $410 million, and since it's already crossed that figure, everything from now until the end of the summer is pretty much all profit. That's great news for Cruise, who's expected to walk away with an astronomical nine-figure payday, the biggest for any actor ever.
On a related note, Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had another good weekend and is now at $909.4 million worldwide. While a billion-dollar final seems like a tall order, it could certainly get somewhere in the $925 million to $950 million range before all is said and done.
