TOP GUN: MAVERICK Has Smallest Drop Ever As It Becomes Tom Cruise's Biggest U.S. Blockbuster; Nears $550M WW

Don't clear the runway just yet because Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick aren't done soaring just yet as the film had the smallest second weekend drop ever for a film that opened over $100 million.

Goodness gracious, great balls of fire!

Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick is still the king of the box office with $86 million in its second weekend, a -32% drop, which is the smallest second-weekend drop ever for a film that opened over $100 million.

The Paramount and Skydance blockbuster has now earned $291.6 million in the United States, making it Tom Cruise's highest-grossing film ever domestically, surpassing Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds ($234.3), which opened in 2005. There's now a very real possibility that Maverick could near or exceed $500 million domestic before the end of its 120-day theatrical run, an absolutely incredible performance.

Top Gun: Maverick also continues to perform exceedingly well overseas, bringing in another $81.7 million and taking its worldwide total to a stunning $548.6 million. It's now Cruise's sixth-biggest hit globally and is well on its way to possibly taking down the $787.1 million haul of Mission: Impossible - Fallout to become his biggest earner ever.

With a production budget of $172.5 million and $150 million in print and advertising, the film's reported break-even number was approximately $410 million, and since it's already crossed that figure, everything from now until the end of the summer is pretty much all profit. That's great news for Cruise, who's expected to walk away with an astronomical nine-figure payday, the biggest for any actor ever.

On a related note, Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had another good weekend and is now at $909.4 million worldwide. While a billion-dollar final seems like a tall order, it could certainly get somewhere in the $925 million to $950 million range before all is said and done.

Check out our exclusive interviews with director Joseph Kosinski and actor Glen Powell (Hangman) below:

In our review, we said, "Top Gun: Maverick is the must-see cinematic experience of the year! Packed with jaw-dropping aerial sequences, thrilling edge-of-your-seat moments, genuine heart, epic romance, huge stakes, and one of the absolute best performances of Tom Cruise's legendary career, this is the theatrical experience you've been waiting for."

Tom Cruise headlines the feature as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, with original co-star Val Kilmer returning as Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky. The iconic pair are joined by an all-star supporting cast consisting of Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin, Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, Jon Hamm as Vice Admiral Cyclone, Glen Powell as Hangman, Lewis Pullman as Bob, Ed Harris as Rear Admiral, Monica Barbaro as Phoenix, Charles Parnell as Rear Admiral Warlock, Danny Ramirez as Fanboy, Manny Jacinto as Fritz, Bashir Salahuddin as Coleman, Jay Ellis as Payback, Jake Picking in an undisclosed role, Raymond Lee in an undisclosed role, Lyliana Wray as Amelia Benjamin, Jean Louisa Kelly as Carole Bradshaw, Greg Davis as Coyote, and Bob Stephenson in an undisclosed role.

Top Gun: Maverick is now play in theaters worldwide!

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of TOPGUN graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

The way i felt after watching this movie yesterday was something i hadn’t felt in a very long time. I left theater very satisfied and impressed. I love Tom Cruise but this movie blew me away. Always had a thing for fighter planes and the Air Force too. Will def see it again before it’s out the theater. Such a great movie.

I’m curious to see what he does after Dead Reckoning 1&2. Id love to see him do a film with Chris Nolan.

Oh and Doc Strange approaching a billion is wild.

@Frshcoupe - it's a movie like we haven't seen in a looooong time.

Box office suggest there's plenty of space for more films like this one.

Looks like all that fake concern regarding MoM amounted to nothing as it performed damn near identically to Civil War. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say BP2 is the net MCU film that gets the fake concern treatment from certain individuals on here.

Also glad to see TG2 bodying the box office, can't wait to see it!

I was starting to feel burnt out by recent action movies. For the most part, Either they were CBMs or other giant blockbusters like the Fast series, Jurassic World, and your standard shaky cam globe trotting action flick. All with CGI that just becomes bland. I was starting feel as though Hollywood forgot how to make engaging action films.

Then I went to see Maverick. I hadn't seen the original Top Gun, so I wasn't expecting much aside from the director I admire, and Tom. I ended up watching this film 3X. I hadn't done that with a film since The Dark Knight. There were scenes in this film where I was literally at the edge of my seat. Somewhat sweaty palms, and damn near holding my breath. Exhilarating from the very first scene to the last.

Tom is one of the last superstars for real. When I think about it, the Mission Impossible films are among the very few that captured my attention these past recent years. They also seem to get better with each instalment (sans MI2) But the main thing that gets me is the practical nature. Mad Max had the same thing. Mostly practcal with CG enhancements.

Tom really flies fighter jets. The actors had to recite their lines in actual fighter jets and they only had one shot to get it right. The danger is mostly real, and the filmmaking reminded me why I'm a film fan. If you haven't seen this yet, I am DEMANDING you fix that soon. Don't wait until it's on the small screen. Go watch this beast in a theater. Trust me, you will not be let down.

Watched it in IMAX and I can say it's the best move, if possible.

@Fogs - I have what's known as "LieMax" near me, so I went to see it there. The screen is massive so the experience and sound was amazing. You have to see this movie with great sound to get the full effect.

@Fogs - The scene in the beginning when Maverick flew past and the roof came off of that building... That wasn't planned. That wasn't even a prop. That was a real building and they kept that in the final cut. The sound from that scene alone was amazing. I seriously can't say enough good things about this film.

@DarthOmega - film was amazing. Haven't left a theater that satisfied in a long time. I've been rewatching all the Mission Impossible films since my 2nd viewing of Maverick. I agree on the tension too it was such a thrill!!!
