UPDATE: SKYFALL Earns $4.6M During IMAX Midnight Showings; Predicted Weekend Of $75M

It's still early days, but Sony are predicting an opening of $75 million for Sam Mendes' critically acclaimed Skyfall. However, rival studios believe that it may even surpass that figure due to the strong international numbers, critical acclaim and positive word of mouth. Read on for details!

According to Deadline, Sony believes that Skyfall is set to open in North America with an incredible $75 million during its first weekend. However, some analysts think that the studio are being more than a little pessimistic and that it's far more likely to end up at around the $85+ million mark. It's simply too early to tell at this point. The Sam Mendes helmed film has already earned $4.6 million from advance IMAX showings and one rival studio exec went so far as to say the following. "The matinee numbers are huge, and if we use Quantum Of Solace patterns, the numbers are going to be very different from what Sony is saying. Enough to confuse everyone. Because right now the hourlies are very, very strong!" While work has already begin on a 24th AND 25th instalment from screenwriter John Logan, this is great news for the franchise. The film recently became the UK's highest grossing release of 2012 and has already earned over $321 million overseas.

UPDATE: The latest figures are in and it appears as if those predictions of an $80 million+ weekend were spot on. The 23rd James Bond movie made $33 million on Friday and with a coveted 'A' CinemaScore from audiences, it looks set to be the highest grossing movie in the franchise EVER. It's thought that Skyfall has so far earned $346.8M internationally, with some analysts saying that they expect the critically acclaimed film to hit $500 million by close of business tomorrow.

Really great movie, and it absolutely blows shitty Bond films like "Die Another Day" out of the water.

I was very underwhelmed. Casino Royale's still my favorite. I will say this, it was a HECK of a lot better than Quantom of Solace.

Needed at least one more giant set piece (like the opening--the komododragon one was too silly and they just had a fight sequence set piece before it) Other than that, the story was great (all about Bond tryng to stay relevant in a modern world--breaking away from bond of the past while retaining what was most important to the franchise) The bond girl was great (marlohe*) but underutilized, however her last scene was a great one (although it was ruined by Bonds insensitive one-liner). Villian was amazing (although he was ruined a bit by his last scene where they just make him a bit too crazy). I loved that the story wasn't about world domination, and instead, was grounded and emotionally close to Bond serving to develop his character. A lot of people saying the third act was dull, I disagree. I thought it was really well done and an interesting set piece (although the grounds keeper willy was a bit random--why the [frick] would he stay--he wasn't a trained agent just some crazy old guy)
The best thing I can say about the movie is (for me) most of the best scenes in the movie are not the action scene (not because they were bad, but because some of the dialogue and tension between characters was so good).

God you Yanks got this very late, we've had it for weeks now in the UK.

Good riddance to all those silly gadgets, stupid villains with knuckle-dragging henchmen and implausible bases with dispensable private soldiers on minimum wage, and pointless girl sidekicks with increasingly stupid names.

The old movies created their own mythos of Boond that was nothing like the books so every idiot who couldn't be bothered to read thought they knew Bond. Welcome to the re-education of the character for the modern world, leave your preconceptions and expectations at the door and you won't be disappointed unless you're expecting another ridiculous formatted action film.

I saw this on Wednesday at Midnight. Absolutely loved it. Yes both Bond girls were kinda meh although Severine was HOT but if anything M was the true "Bond Girl" of the movie. Craig, Dame Dench and Bardem were top notch and while the throwbacks to the older films was nice, they were kinda cheesy. IMO it was the most personal Bond movie.

DangerStranger,

Totally agree with you about this. The last two have been grounded as in the way they introduced the gadgets.
BTW, Ceejay lives on Planet Ceejay which I understand is a cold and hostile planet.

What a fantastic film. Not only a great Bond film, but a great film in general. I couldn't wipe the huge grin off my face the whole time! I couldn't believe it! A full blown, REAL BOND FILM! With stunts and gadgets and Q and a sense of FUN! It was great! I wish Daniel Craig could be Bond forever. I truly do.

I felt like I was watching 'Goldfinger', it was THAT great!

the actions scenes lacked creativity but the dialogue and scenes in general were pretty well written. The third act was kind of shoehorned into the plot, but not completely lazy.

Enjoyed it and yes one word to sum it up was personal. Sure there were some over the top moments, but over all it was solid.

I'm curious though if world domination villains are so cold war, cheesy and over the top, are we just to expect terrorist villains from now on? Wouldnt that get old too? I mean where do you go from now in the form of villains?

And the real gadgets vs cheesy gadgets, it's crazy bc like star trek, there was a time when these movies actually inspired real world inventions.. But I do prefer them to use more real world spy gadgets...

Pretty great film. Casino Royale is still my all-time favourite Bond flick, but this one hits pretty close.

darkbeefstakes hit the nail on the head with a lot of the things that I felt were wrong with the film as well. Could have used a bit more Bardem too, but his first scene is just fantastic. For about two minutes or so, they linger on him talking to Bond about these "two rats" and I hung off of every word he said in that scene. It was incredible, and the film was massive in IMAX.

Plus, The Hobbit trailer made me smile. I think this new trilogy may even be better than the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I'll keep an open-mind about it until I see it. :D
