Warner Bros. Moving Ahead With MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN Adaptation

Chances are you won't have heard of this obscure comic book character from the 1930s. Well, Warner Bros. (who own the rights to all those DC superheroes remember) are now planning on a modern day re-imagining of the Lee Falk creation.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Warner Bros. have picked up the rights to Mandrake the Magician, a character created by Lee Falk in 1934. The studio are currently on the hunt for new writers (the project has been in development for a while at various other studios) in what will be a makeover in a similar style to that of the Sherlock Holmes franchise. Mandrake is an illusionist who uses his powers to hypnotize his foes. He and his companion, an African strongman called Lothar, fight everyone from gangsters to aliens during their adventures. Oh, and his twin brother uses his hypnotic powers for evil instead of good. Atlas Entertainment are producing.

With all these films WB is moving ahead with, I just hope they haven't forgotten about most of their DC catalog.

The twin brother is not his only enemy. His archenemy is called The Cobra who leads old and powerful criminal organization originating in medieval times. And he hides his true identity behind a silver mask.

Huh, that Defenders of the Earth cartoon seems familiar. I must have watched a couple of episodes.

Something about real life Magicians used to creep me out, well, the more eccentric ones did. I never had a problem with their assistants though. :P

Heh, reading this makes me want Marvel to move forward with the Doctor Strange movie.

@teabag I hope so, man. When it comes to movies, DC/WB is too afraid of trying something new.

Wow Warner Bros. is such a joke. They own DC and that entire pantheon of characters, and what do they do? They make a Mandrake movie. And why? Probably because the "Suits" thought it would be similar to Harry Potter in sales since its all about magic. I cant wait until the day when Warner Bros. has different leadership

Oh dear Lord. I remember Mandrake... and all the Mandrake ripoffs. Everyone started coming out with a tuxedoed magician who could throw a mean right hook. I do like Prince Lothar, though. Well, I'm sure I (and other pulp/comic book fans in their 90s) will enjoy this movie...

Any 80's child knows who Mandrake is...Hmmm forget a justice league film...do individual films for the cast of Defenders of the Earth...then do a Defenders of the earth film!!!

That would be epic!!!
