Adrian Pasdar Discusses Voicing Iron Man Anime

The images and trailers we have seen from Marvels upcoming foray in anime with Iron Man have been pretty impressive. Along with Wolverine, Iron Man is set to premiere on G4 July 29. Hero Complex recently caught up with Heroes star Adrian Pasdar who provides the voice of Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the animated series to see what he had to say about the role.

What follows are just a few excerpts from the interview at Hero Complex...

How were you first introduced to Iron Man and Tony Stark?

I think my knowledge of the Marvel character came through my childhood and the comics, and obviously through the resurgence of the character through the [Jon] Favreau films. I did have an understanding of it through the comics as a kid, so the opportunity to do it was just really exciting.

The format was the most challenging element. It’s Japanese animation, and the pattern of speech the Japanese have is a bit different than standard North American vernacular. It can be a little bit more drawn out and emotional — the structure at least. So making it work in English — as it probably is for them translating from English to Japanese — as we all know, can be a little bit funny and sometimes dicey to watch it dubbed. You’re not really sure if we’re getting the full intent of the artist. That added a whole new layer of bringing a North American understanding of who Tony Stark is to the Japanese re-conception of who Tony Stark is in their eyes. An American character done in Japanese, and then drawn back in English.

How did you come aboard the project, and have you talked to your “little brother” and fellow anime voice-over actor Milo Ventimiglia, who voices Wolverine?

We actually cross paths in the series. Iron Man and Wolverine. It came up because Jeph Loeb is the head of Marvel Television and he was a writer-producer on “Heroes” and we became friends through that experience. When he landed at Marvel and this became a project, he rang me up. I was in Ireland on a film and I couldn’t have been further from being available, but they waited until I got back.

The anime sucks....i dont believe that people are actually interested in this crap.
Marvel really needs to step up their game up in the animation department and take better control over their products instead of prostituting themselves to these other lame ass animation houses that are just butchering the characters and basically saying F*CK YOU to the source material.
Just releasing one failed animated series after another. When will the cycle end??

I'm wondering why Marvel can go into partnership with Sony on anime projects but can't do so with the live-action Spider Man.

Surely, if Disney own Marvel and this collaboration with Sony, using a property wholly owned by Marvel, can take place, there must be some way for these studios to work together on the Spidey franchise?

I'm probably being a bit dim and missing something vital but there's the whiff of wasted opportunity about the whole set-up.

ive been watching the xmen anime and thought it was alright. I think the people in charge of the anime are a little to bias, they focus on hisako (Armor) a lot cause shes japanese and have to revisit japan for a lot of eps and shes not even that interesting as a character. All the other characters seem to be spot on except emma frost, wheres her charm or her sick twisted humor?

So HE'S the voice i can't stand lol No idea it was him, he sounds like he's in his late teens, early 20's on that show. Is that how old Stark is supposed to be on the show?

I've been a fan of anime for a long time and it's a
really beautful art. But i hope that they do these
characters justice and stick to their personality's
at least, otherwise it's not worth watching.

For me, they should only allow them to do the animation and Marvel write the stories. I love the character details but their story telling is too exaggerated! They need to stick to the point and move on. It's like a never-ending repetition of lines.

How is it that some of you have seen the Iron Man Anime allready, I thought it did'nt come out til later this month. From the trailer no one can dispute the beauty the animation.Whats not to like here? I dont get that argument at all. As far as this new Iron Man thread goes. why not? Even in Marvel we have multiple sliding doors in the time continuem I.E., universes. Relax haters, take a day off, you dont have to be uptight asses all the time.
