NIMONA: A New Hero Takes Shape In Full Trailer For Netflix's LQBTQ+ Themed Animated Adventure

"A little Anti. A Little Hero."

This one has been in development for a long time, and following last month's brief teaser, Netflix has finally released a full trailer and a new poster for Nimona.

The animated fantasy adventure from Nick Bruno and Troy Quane (Spies in Disguise) was originally set for release under 20th Century Fox's Blue Sky Studios back in 2020, but after the Disney acquisition, the project received pushback from the Mouse House's new leadership because of the story's LGBTQ+ themes.

The movie ended up being cancelled altogether, but was recently given a new lease of life by Annapurna Pictures, and is set to hit Netflix on June 30.

“Remember when you were a kid and you would build a tower of blocks? Then your brother or sister would knock them over and you’d have to rebuild them?” Bruno told Empire in a recent interview. “It felt a little like that.”

The first reviews are now online, and the movie is currently sitting at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (granted, only 10 verdicts have been added so far, so that score might well fluctuate).

Check out the trailer and poster below, and let us know what you think.

"When Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn't commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem — who also happens to be a shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy.

But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona’s the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc — for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to… just wreak serious havoc."

Nimona features the voice talents of Chloë Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, Eugene Lee Yang, Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, Beck Bennett, RuPaul Charles, Indya Moore, Julio Torres, and Sarah Sherman.

@Midnaslament - It does actually. Too many racist incels who don't even read comics. We didn't revolt over Raven being whitewashed in Teen Titans, but Princess Tiana and Black Panther whose race are TIED to their character, need to be white.

original LGBTQ content and not injecting it in pre established IP. I'm sure the chuds will be happy about that cause they always say make your own stuff. Well, now they have. Let's see if the neck beards will cry about this too💁

@AvalonX - There's a new animated series on Disney Junior with a BLACK Ariel.

Last I checked white people played Asians with their eyes taped, did brownface to play Middle Eastern and Latinos/Latinas and also Egyptians.

But yes, imaginary aliens, fairies and mermaids is where you draw the line with "accuracy".

Loved the graphic novel, so I’m looking forward to this.

Currently sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 10 reviews after a festival showing.

The story sounds pretty standard.

So explain why they have to make it a point to say a character is gay or LGBTWTF.

Who cares what a persons orientation is.

I’ll just watch breaking bad and El Camino and Better Call Saul instead. Love me some Kim Wexler.

why need to tell his/her sexual orientation? just make it a show without. telling that person is LGBTQRSTVUW+....come onnnn
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 6/16/2023, 7:17 AM
@solskulldeath - Because the default sexual orientation in animation has been straight for 100 years, so that it's a non-straight lead is newsworthy.

solskulldeath - 6/17/2023, 3:18 AM
@ClintThaHamster - don't get me wrong. If he or she is gay, just make it. no need to they are gay. Easy. Depends to audience if they feel ok with that or not.
