As we first reported on Toonado.com, production has officially begun on Scooby-Doo: Origins, Netflix's upcoming live-action reboot of the beloved Hanna-Barbera cartoon. The streaming series is a modern reimagining of the beloved group of teens and their iconic dog, "exploring the terrifying first case that brings Mystery Inc. together for good."

There's also a first look at the series, featuring a fun glimpse of Maxwell Jenkins (Lost in Space) as Fred Jones, Mckenna Grace (Scream 7) as Daphne Blake, Abby Ryder Fortson (Ant-Man) as Velma Dinkley, and Tanner Hagen (The Pitt) as Shaggy Rogers.

There's no sign of Scooby-Doo, but we do see his paw print.

According to Netflix, in Scooby-Doo: Origins, showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (and their production company, Midnight Radio) "are going back to the beginning, and the terrifying case that started it all." It's also been confirmed today that Paul Walter Hauser has joined the cast in a currently undisclosed role.

"During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy who may have been a witness to a supernatural murder," reads the official synopsis for the show.

"Alongside the pragmatic and scientific townie Velma and the strange but ever-so-handsome new kid Freddy, they set out to solve the case that’s pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets."

Scooby-Doo: Origins will be executive produced by Rosenberg and Appelbaum, as well as Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman (via Berlanti Productions), and André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson (via Midnight Radio). Toby Haynes will also serve as an executive producer and direct the premiere episode.

"One of my first and favorite jobs in Hollywood was sitting with Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera while they signed animation cels," Berlanti said today. "Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures their amazing spirits and their genius creation."

There's a chance that we'll start seeing set photos for the series soon (that's often why shots like these are released when production starts), but with Scooby-Doo expected to be a CG character, we'll be waiting a while before seeing him in action.

Check out this first look at Scooby-Doo: Origins in the Instagram post below, and stay tuned for updates on the series as we have them.

So are the Hollywood sh!theads gonna make the one girl gay again?

@DocSpock - Of course they will. But as someone who grew up loving Scooby Doo, I’ll have to give this a chance. I hope they somehow pull it off and this show is Stranger Things early season good but I doubt it. In the meantime, they had better give Shaggy a green v neck and get Fred as ascot!

@DocSpock - Were they all hetero in the cartoon?

@DocSpock - it's a kids movie you dork why would you even give a shit. have you literally never met a gay person before? Right-wing snowflakes get so bent out of shape when one single character isn't white and straight.

@Bucky74 -

I watched this show with my youngest weasel when she was little, and I must admit, I thought it was great.

Yes, they were normal in the original cartoons.

Okay, so you are gay and an a$$hole. Why did you bring race into it? It's okay that you are racist; no one cares.

@DocSpock - So hetero means normal to you?

Dude you're not normal for thinking like that. But that's cool. You be you.

@DocSpock - We don't know how the individual personalities are going to be represented but, I will give them credit for accurately reflecting the source-material and not succumbing to forced "diversity" for the cast itself. 🤓

@foreverintheway - I dunno, you seem pretty bent out of shape over him being bent out of shape 😂 I don’t have an issue with gay characters at all, I just think they’re highly over represented in media these days and in everything else. Like we went from pride day to pride week to pride month. Also, I would make the argument that anyone who thinks that billion dollar corporations are doing these things out of the goodness of their hearts is somewhat naive. Seeing as none of these characters have ever been portrayed as gay (unless you count that one abomination) and have all been typically portrayed as straight, It would obviously be done to check boxes so they can have an easy brownie point for being progressive. Every choice with intellectual properties of that size is gone over meticulously to gain maximum profit. They don’t, have not, and never will care about these causes, it’s just trendy to care about them now so they just say “Ayyy let’s make Velma a lesbian because she looks kind of like a nerdy outcast”. It’s easy for them and the people who fall for it lap it up. Great representation happens organically, not just making Velma gay because she has what could be considered a non traditional or vaguely queer look about her.

I wish Shaggy had the green shirt though but oh well.

Also nice to have confirmation about Paul Walter Hauser joining the cast aswell (some are reporting he’s Scooby’s original owner while others are like he’s the villain , I think perhaps both?).

Anyway as a Scooby Doo fan since childhood , I’m looking forward to this!!.

Any form of media that has "Origins" in it's title is doomed from the start lol.

Could be good.

@harryba11zack - Origins was basically City 2.0, while Knight (despite its issues) was the actual next step in the franchise.

I thought they were adapting the original Scooby-Doo, not A Pup Named Scooby-Doo....

What's with the 12 & 13 year old's? That is not Shaggy..

@XRayCat - Given the ages, it's more of a redo of the (awful) Cartoon Network live-action movies than A Pup Named Scooby-Doo.

They all look the part, which is more than we could say about the last effort. Hope it's good!
I'm guessing they are wearing the camp uniform tshirt and will for most of this. I really hope it doesn't end with them finally wearing their classic clothes on the final shot.
