The past few years have seen Pixar focus much of its energy on sequels to its most beloved franchises, culminating with the release of
Toy Story 4 this week. But as the studio previously suggested, 2020 will be all about originals.
Following
the reveal of Onward, Pixar has announced a second new original film slated to open next year -
Soul.
Disney hasn't provided many details about the film other than a simple logo and vague description that reads:
"Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you … you?" This already intriguing premise was furthered by Pixar's announcement tweet, which teased a journey that'll take you
"from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions."
Soul is being directed by two-time Oscar winner Pete Docter (
Up,
Inside Out), who is also acting as Pixar's chief creative officer following the exit of former creative head John Lasseter. Academy Award nominee Dana Murray is producing the feature.
As mentioned,
Soul will be the second original Pixar animated movie releasing in 2020. The previously announced
Onward - starring Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as a pair of elves in a suburban fantasy world - will release in theaters on March 6, 2020.
Soul is slated to arrive in theaters a few months later on June 19, 2020.
More details for both of these movies will likely be shared at D23 Expo in August.
