With Warner Bros./DC Green Lantern in 2011, should Marvel compete with their cosmic hero, Nova?

Marvel may be prepping their Initiative for the Avengers in 2012 with a diverse ensemble of characters ranging from fantasy, historical, and (possible) current technology (Ironman), but will they eventually counteract the move by DC's intergalactic hero, Green Lantern.

Marvel Studios has had many great accomplishments in premiering their b-list and a-list characters. Films such as Ironman, Blade, and Spiderman have influenced the ongoing trend of the Heroic Age appearing on the big screens. The coming years hold high expectations for comic book fans especially with the upcoming superhero extravaganza, Avengers. DC is Marvel's only competitor in both the comic and film industry. Superman and Batman are the only holders of DC's flag currently, but that will change in 2011 with Martin Campbell's Green Lantern. However, Marvel has Thor holding their flag at the same date. Once again, Marvel and DC will exchange a flurry of punches to see who deserves the throne of the box office kingdom.

Captain America and Ironman will help boost Marvel's market, but there is still the doubt that some people keep in mind and that is if Captain America will be any good. There has been many disappointing updates on Cap's casting thus far and some fans have questioned on whether the director is up to the task. If Cap fails to satisfy the fans, then the Avengers will be at risk. Thor seems to look like a complete success even when it has not released yet. This is due to the wonderful director, Kenneth Branagh, and his oscar worthy cast. Marvel is undoubtedly taking aggressive action towards the competition from DC. Avengers will contain mixed elements from fantasy, science fiction, history, and modern mythology. Marvel may seem to have everything covered, but they are missing one element that DC will present to theaters by 2011, the cosmos.

The Green Lantern will be the first ever superhero to travel across the universe and to other galaxies fighting off intergalactic crime and war. The film has the potential in becoming a spectacular franchise with the likes of Star Wars, Star Trek, and Lord of the Rings, but beyond middle earth. Marvel may want to keep a close eye on GL and challenge such a genre. Marvel has their cosmic heroes as well such as Silver Surfer, The Inhumans, The Guardians of the Galaxy, and Nova aka. Richard Rider.

Green Lantern is currently one of the leading comic titles in the comic book industry being placed in the top ten. It has remained in the top ten throughout 2009 and still in 2010. It has been in first place before. Nova may not be in the top ten, twenty or fifty, but it is in the top 100 out of the thousands or millions of comics being published. Marvel's cosmic hero is not as popular as DC emerald knight, but the story has great quality and almost equal to GL's fantastic experience.

Nova's story is very engaging and entertaining. It has great potential to be Marvel's next box-office success. Marvel's pact with Disney should effect Nova's possible premiere to the public. If Marvel and Disney want to introduce more B-List heroes to the public, Nova is the right direction to start.

Nova aka. Richard Rider's origin begins with him as a student at the fictional Harry S. Truman High School in Hempstead, New York, is chosen at random by the alien Rhomann Dey, last surviving Nova Centurion of the planet Xandar's elite Nova Corps, to inherit his power and succeed him in the rank of Nova Prime following the destruction of his world by the intergalactic pirate Zorr. Having been mortally wounded in the battle that tore Xandar apart, Dey succeeds in tracking Zorr to Earth, but is unable to exact vengeance due to the extent of his injuries. At death's door, Dey has little choice but to transfer his power to an unsuspecting human on the planet below, praying that whomever he finds will take up his cause.

Sounds like Green Lantern aka. Hal Jordan's origin but they are different none the less.

The Green Lantern Corps is an awesome police force, so is the Nova Corps.

Other cosmic characters, especially the Silver Surfur, whom is the popular vote from fans to have a film adaptation of his own, can premiere along side Nova in his film.

Nova fighting Silver Surfur with Galactus gazing in the background would look astonishing on the big screen. Nova and Surfur's dynamic duo would be amazing.
Annihilation Conquest can be Nova's main event and the beacon for emerging sequels while Green Lantern will have the Sinestro Corps War.

Nova and the Green Lantern could become the new intergalactic iconic heroes of the decade. Not only that, but the special effects could very well surpass that of James Cameron's Avatar.

gotta agree with Teabag. i love Nova, and would love a movie for him. I could see them doing Annihilation, but like Morte said, i don't think we'll be seeing the Sinestro War anytime soon.

although, i gotta disagree with Morte about Annihilation. I think that would be an exellent way to introduce the cosmic side of the MU! the characters in Annihilation were all oldschool b-list characters (for the most part). they wouldn't necessarily need to have the whole Drax, Thanos, Superskrull, parts in it. just the huge threat of the Annihilation wave sweeping the universe, and the Nova Corps getting obliterated. They could introduce Quasar in it too!

but, maybe Morte's right. it would have to be a very stripped down version, and i wonder where Annihilus stands as far as movie rights go. is he owned by Fox?? if thats the case, then it shouldn't be done...

but basically, yeah, the Nova Corps are like the Marvel verison of the GL Corps, so they could easily make it work! and there's already been interest in wanting to do some cosmic Marvel movies, so maybe...i can't really think of anyone OTHER than Nove, especially since Galactus and SS are owned by Fox.

NovaPrime : Great article. Nova is one of my favorites without a doubt. However as you stated he is very similar in origins and circumstance to GL ( Nova Corps, Space police and so on). So much so, that I think the average movie goer would think he is simply a GL rip off.

That being said, I'm not so sure GL will be the first "Star Spanning" hero on screen. Kevin Feige has mentioned a couple of times his excitement about Thor being a dimension crossing, star crossing movie. If they stay true to the comics Thor certainly has the history to be such a film.

I would love to see Nova but I think they should incorporate him into another film first to warm the audience to him and get them to overlook his GL similarities.

Marvel does have plenty of other characters they could do this with.

Warlock
Mar-vel
Quasar
Starlord
Firelord : Most of the Heralds could be utilized in the same way SS could.
Drax : Who is a very interesting movie-worthy character since his revamp.
The Guardians of the Galaxy
Deaths Head
Ronan : The ongoing struggle between the Kree and the Skrulls could be akin to Star Wars.

nova definitely rocks! as does the cosmic part of the marvel universe.

i see one huge problem:
DC has laid a solid foundation for a green lantern movie. in the justice league cartoon, john stewart's character was awesome. green lantern has appeared in DC animated features and now even has a feature himself (first flight). DC has spent a couple decades solidifying a green lantern consciousness outside of the comics.

now to marvel: i can't think of ANY groundwork they've laid for this character to be in any film. don't get me wrong, i LOVE nova and the cosmic universe (my fave is silver surfer), but even amongst marvel fanboys the cosmic stuff isn't the most popular.

i think what we need is for marvel to put forth some cosmic stuff in animation and create a little awareness and consciousness in the larger market. i think that's going to work well for DC. it would be a huge step forward for marvel too.

Yes! Nova would be kicketh-arseth!

foxfan-- Very good point. You are completely right. Nobody knows who Nova is but US. That could have it's advantages though. If I remember correctly, Nova is a young dude. If they get an enthusiastic actor, the right script, and enough budget to make it nice, I don't see why it wouldn't still be successful. Kind of like all the people that are Transformer fans and have only seen the movies.

I have a question/statement about GREEN LANTERN. I've never understood how he is supposed to be a "beat cop". He's never been a cop. He's a test pilot for the airforce right? In the animated feature, "Crisis of 2 Earths" he refers to himself as a beat cop at the end of the day. It reminded me that he says this from time to time. But he's not a beat cop. He's part of the Green Lantern Corps. So that makes him a soldier, right?

It just made me wonder how they are going to treat this aspect of Hal in the movie. Maybe they could make him an MP at first and then he's kicked out for being too rough or smart-assy and then almost discharged but then picks up the test pilot gig somehow? Anybody have any insight?

Hey thanks bro, yeah you're right. Green Lantern will premiere and once people see his story they will think he is the first intergalactic hero, specifically speaking of non-fans. If Nova appears on screen they're will be controversies since many would think Nova is copying the concept of GL. In reality Nova is a copycat of Gl but his story is a bit different and intriguing.
Nova is Marvel's only option, to me, for a great cosmic film.

honestly if Marvel wants to compete with GL for the cosmos, they're going to need a bigger name than Nova. silver surfer would be their best bet but outside us fanboys he may not cut it with the rest of the box office. in my opinion i would let DC have the cosmos with the Green Lantern Corps and have Marvel take on the underworld with a reboot of Ghost Rider. i just personally don't think Nova would bring in the competition that Marvel needs to go up against Green Lantern. just my two cents though...
