Eerie Masaru Concept Art From Warner Bros. Defunct AKIRA Remake

The website, Film Sketchr, has come across more concept art from Warner Bros. cancelled live-action take on Akira. These images were created for Jaume Collet-Serra's ("Orphan") version, that would've starred Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund.

Film Sketchr, recently came across concept art that was created by Howard Lau, for Jaume Collet-Serra incarnation of Akira. Over the years, Warner Bros. has made several attempts at bringing a live-action remake of the classic anime film to the silver screen, but have come up empty each time. The closest they came was 2011-2012, with Jaume Collet-Serra set to direct and Garrett Hedlund set to play the lead, Kaneda. Budget concerns eventually shutdown production, even though the director made drastic cuts to make it more appealing to WB. The cast was rumored to have Kristen Stewart as the female lead (Ky), Ken Watanabe as The Colonel, Helena Bonham Carter as Lady Miyako, and Michael Pitt ("Boardwalk Empire") and Dane DeHaan ("The Amazing Spider-Man 2") were in the mix for Tetsuo. You can read a description of the plot below the Masaru images.

As for the images below, for those of you that don't know or your memory has gotten fuzzy, Masaru is part of The Espers (aka the "Numbers").
The Espers came together when Takashi, Masaru, and Kiyoko developed psychic powers and were taken to the Nursery with the original intention to develop their potential for political purposes. They met and befriended each other and Akira, but were left behind under the care of Colonel Shikishima and the scientists when Akira transcended to a godlike existence and destroyed the original Tokyo in the process. To prevent a future psychic explosion, the Espers were fed drugs to inhibit their developing powers, with the side effects of suffering physical impairments - Kiyoko eventually became bedridden and Masaru was afflicted with polio. The drugs also inhibited their physical growth but they aged along with everyone else, appearing in the early 40's. - akira.wikia

Kaneda is a bar owner in Neo-Manhattan who is stunned when his brother, Tetsuo, is abducted by government agents led by The Colonel.

Desperate to get his brother back, Kaneda agrees to join with Ky Reed and her underground movement who are intent on revealing to the world what truly happened to New York City thirty years ago when it was destroyed. Kaneda believes their theories to be ludicrous but after finding his brother again, is shocked when he displays telekinetic powers.

Ky believes Tetsuo is headed to release a young boy, Akira, who has taken control of Tetsuo’s mind. Kaneda clashes with The Colonel’s troops on his way to stop Tetsuo from releasing Akira but arrives too late. Akira soon emerges from his prison courtesy of Tetsuo as Kaneda races in to save his brother before Akira once again destroys Manhattan island, as he did thirty years ago.

RPD is hopefully just messing with people.... that or just doesnt like quality animation with a great story.

BUT compared to the Manga, it does lack SOME. The manga is PHENOMENAL

I hate when people say something should never be done.
If the right creative team got behind it then YES a live action Akira movie could be great.

That same negative thinking wouldve had people quit attempting CBMs back when they sucked. But no, eventually people proved you can make a great CBM.

Same can (and eventually will) be said about Anime adaptations.

@RPD, you must be like 13, right? No real fan of anime would have hit enter on that post...

I'm a huge Akira fan, born in the 80s I grew up on this! I for one would love to see a live action adaptation... I'll still have the original if I don't like it.

With the right creative team, this could be incredible!

@Tevii, Right! As awesome as it is, its oudated. Outdated in the sense that youngsters like RPD probably think anine peaked at Dragon Ball Z. It needs to be presented to the next generation is a way that they can relate to it because the essence of the story is epic. What's wrong with getting a remake?

@Ineedrevelation, agreed on Advent Children, but, this is classic. I could argue that if this never happened maybe Ac wouldn't have neen so great.

Actually quite glad this isn't getting live action butchery from the same Hollywood that made Justin Chatwin Goku.

"Is that you again, Tetsuo?!"

"That...pea brain."

@Tevii - true that. To those who only saw the anime (the vast majority), go read the manga. It's one of the definitive mangas/comics of all time. In fact, most of Otomo's work is exceptionnal. One that I particularly recommend is Dômu. Read it and you won't be sorry.

@InifiteMonkey, why not change the cast to match the ethnicity of the names and the source material. It's almost 2000 and 14, Sir. Ever heard of Cloud Atlas? It's amazing what makeup artist, wardrobe designers and, actors can do these days. Not everything should be dumbed down...

Akira was the first anime I ever watched. [frick]ing mind blower. Still has to be one of the absolute greatest ever made. @Enphlieuwince, sorry man but Cloud Atlas sucked complete ass! What an over hyped goofy, train wreck that was, but I digress. I DO however agree with your original point about SFX peoples(designers, wardrobe, etc.) ability, when used correctly, to capture amazing characters, landscapes, and action etc. So in summary, Akira=great, Cloud Atlas=bad, SFX=great potential for amazing movies, if done carefully.

For those who never read the actual graphic novels, the animated movie is merely a mosaic of the ground breaking story. There is so much more to the entire collection of stories than what they sampled in that movie. We don't need one live action film, Akira deserves at least two or three to tell everything. Zack Snyder would do it true justice with an all Japanese cast.

@Snakeofdoom, agreed. I was strictly speaking in regards to the aforementioned attributes of the film which were successful...

I think that cast is great as far as acting ability.

But Making Kaneda a "bar owner" is absurd. There is no excuse for not keeping them a futuristic Biker Gang, thats part of the point, of them being outlaws. Kaneda would NEVER have that kinda of responsibility of being a business owner, he's reluctant to get into anything that takes responsibility. That why his sense of responsibility to Tetsuo who IS NOT HIS FREAKING BROTHER, makes more of an impact.

I would loved to have seen Stanley Kubrick take this on, it's a story made for a Kubrick film.

Give it to nolan, give a ton of money to him for production and step back.
