After the first teaser brought the style, this new trailer for Netflix's live-action One Piece brings the substance as the Straw Hat crew showcase their familiar personalites and quirks. Netflix's adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's best-selling shonen manga series drops on August 31.
While anime and manga fans have been burned before by Netflix (looking at you Death Note and Cowboy Bebop), there's certainly a lot to feel optimistic about in the new trailer. Luffy is a goofball, Sanji and Zoro have their rivalry over who's more of a badass, and Nami appears to be the only sensible one in the crew.
Showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda definitely seem to have done their homework. In addition to leading the creative development of the series, the duo are also responsible for writing three of the eight episodes that make up the first season.
Netflix's live-action adaptation stars:
- Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy
- Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro
- Emily Rudd as Nami
- Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp
- Taz Skylar as Sanji
Other cast members include Morgan Davies as Koby, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Alvida, Aidan Scott as Helmeppo, Jeff Ward as Buggy, McKinley Belcher III as Arlong, Vincent Regan as Garp and Peter Gadiot as Shanks.
The series is produced by Tomorrow Studios alongside the manga's publisher, Shueisha.
Marc Jobst directed the first two episodes, titled Romance Dawn and The Man in the Straw Hat.
One-piece fans are cautiously optimistic about the series. The prospect of a live-action adaptation of One Piece is certainly exciting, however, it's hard to forget Netflix's previous anime adaptation misfires, such as Death Note and Cowboy Bebop.
