DETECTIVE PIKACHU: Breaking Down All The New Pokemon Revealed In That Awesome Trailer

We got an incredible new trailer for Detective Pikachu yesterday but did you catch all the Pokemon cameos? In this breakdown, we list all the amazing creatures who made their live-action debut here...

All the signs are pointing to Detective Pikachu being nothing short of amazing and if nothing else, it's going to be a lot of fun seeing so many Pokemon finally arrive in a live-action setting.

Some will have full-blown roles, while others will essentially be background extras but that should make this movie no less satisfying for those who have collected the cards, played the games, and watched the many animated TV shows and movies. Now, we're delving into the latest trailer to bring you a breakdown of all the Pokemon who make an appearance.

We're obviously not including the likes of Pikachu, Charizard, and
Mr. Mime as we saw them in the teaser; instead, we're focusing solely on all of the newly revealed creatures.

So, to take a look at this feature in its entirety, all you have to do is hit the "View List" button!

Ludicolo

Xiwqulve o

Ludicolo isn't the most well-known Pokemon out there but if you've been playing Pokemon Go, you'll no doubt recognise it as the water and grass type Pokemon that evolves from Lombre (which starts off as Lotad).

It has a pretty freaky look but one that's obviously going to be played for laughs if this trailer is any sort of indication.

What its appearance here makes clear is that Detective Pikachu isn't going to shy away from featuring Pokemon which a) aren't from the original 150 and b) may not be immediately recognisable to those that grew up with the franchise but may have since lapsed.

Arcanine

Gv3dyzcm o

We've seen Growlithe before now but this trailer provides our first proper look at its evolved form: Arcanine.

It seems as if Ryme City's Police Department will make good use of fire type Pokemon as two officers are flanked by the aforementioned Growlithes but Arcanine appears to be protecting the precinct because it's that little bit more powerful.

Golurk

Ko2hg3c3 o

Those hulking brutes are Golurks, ground/ghost type Pokemon that are clearly being utilised - alongside Arcanine - as protection for the Police Department.

They're certainly extremely formidable looking so you can see why they've been selected but it will be interesting seeing how Pokemon being used this way is addressed, especially as we spent so many years following the adventures of a Pokemon trainer who cared about the creatures he came across rather than utilising them in such a practical manner.

Kingler, Slacking

Tsmex3bp o

You'll have to look closely for these two but a Slaking can be seen hanging out under the highway bridge, while part of a Kingler is shown behind a police car. In terms of the latter, it seems as if that will also serve as protection of sorts as it's another formidable creature which can hold its own.

Snorlax

Hx4i17mz o

How cool is this?

As great as Snorlax looks, though, what you may have missed is the in-joke here for fans. Snorlax is shown blocking the road and if you've ever played the games, you'll know that the massive Pokemon would frequently block your way to keep certain areas off-limits for the time being.

With any luck, we'll get to see Snorlax do more than sleep as he's such an awesome Pokemon.

Machamp

G6wk6ds6 o

Yes, that is indeed a Machamp directing traffic and if I had to hazard a guess, I would say that this one is working for Ryme City PD.

After all, he's certainly making the sort of motions you would expect from a traffic officer and looks great in live-action (even if it does look like the special effects could do with some polishing).

Pancham

D7vf1c6c o

We saw Pancham in the teaser trailer on a "Missing" poster but one of them can be seen in the background here alongside someone we're assuming is its trainer. The Pokemon looks extremely cute and is one it's easy enough to imagine there being plenty of toys of when this movie is released.

Loudred

Uhjuxjkw o

Are Pokemon basically just slaves in this city? In one of the coolest sequences, we get a glimpse of what seems to be an underground fighting arena and the DJ is using a number of Loudreds as a makeshift sound system of sorts.

There's certainly a lot of the creatures here and this makes for a cool visual (as does the classic game shoutout with "Critical Hit!" appearing on the screen behind them).

Blastoise

Zwrfw9gv o

Squirtle has looked pretty cute up until now but Blastoise looks like a total badass and is unleashing those iconic water cannons on his foes in this sneak peek.

The Loudred can be seen in the background and it definitely looks like this is an underground fight arena rather than an actual gym as there's something very sketchy about the entire set up. Regardless, did you notice who Blastoise's opponent is?

Gengar

Bxwx2obo o

Yes, that is indeed what appears to be an entire gang of Gengars before they each get taken out by a blast of water. The ghost type Pokemon is one of the originals and it's interesting to see the form it takes here as it's always been given something of a solid appearance in the games and cartoons.

Cubone

Gxcmhngo o

The only Pokemon we see coming out of a Pokeball, Cubone looks like he's been lifted straight from the games/animated series for his live-action debut and given the grassy surroundings, I wouldn't be surprised if what we're witnessing here ends up being a classic battle.

It's no secret that many fans are disappointed those are being put on the backburner for this city-based mystery but it now appears as if Detective Pikachu won't totally ignore that side of things.

Flareon

Ilpdp0d1 o

Flareon is the Pokemon you'll receive if you give Eevee a Fire Stone and something tells me that this one is going to have a villainous nature. It certainly looks like a good mixture of cute and deadly anyway, while there are three "cameos" in the background which definitely have fans talking.

Yes, those are Arceus, Dialga, and Palkia, the three Legendary Pokemon from the Diamond and Pearl games.

While there's nothing to say that they'll make a physical appearance, it's good to know that Legendary creatures are clearly viewed as being something special and mythical.

Rattata

2q1qtl8y o

You still remember catching your first Rattata, right?

Look closely when Pikachu enters the arena and one can be seen clearly desperate to get inside the cage as it gnaws at the bars. This is an easy one to miss, especially when there's a very cute Charmander on the other side of the screen.

Treecko

Vif2gchr o

The Generation III starter Pokemon, Treecko can be seen in the same scene as Charmander and Rattata hiding out on the stands. As cool as these cameos are, it's probably best we accept now that not every one of these Pokemon will be given something to do beyond looking cool in the background!

Audino, Octillery

Ysqk8ysh o

As well as previously seen Pokemon Lickitung and Pancham, the octopus-like Octillery can be seen in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen, while Audino - who could be partially seen in the first teaser - also makes an appearance.

Both look exactly as you might expect and it's great seeing them in this setting.

Mewtwo

Ebveuzfj o

The big reveal in this trailer is obviously Mewtwo and while we don't know how his origin story will be different here compared to what was revealed in the original animated Pokemon movie, he looks nothing short of awesome.

The prevailing theory/rumour is that he'll be a villain before it's revealed that he's actually being controlled by a human scientist.

Regardless of whether or not that proves to be the case, Mewtwo is one of the most powerful Pokemon to ever appear in this world, so Pikachu is going to have his work cut out for him...

Machamp directing traffic had me cheesing lol, nobody would dare run a red light on him Haha. I'm trying to theorize how Mewtwo will be defeated or whatnot.. there are 4 possible ways this could happen with a few seeming impossible due to the amount of fan service (but you'd get a standing ovation out of me) lol.. the first and most likely: Tim and Pikachu band together with trainers and such from the city to take him down, second would be Tim catching pokemon along the way and unleashing them all at once on Mewtwo. Third would be the coolest shit ever if it happened and I'm talking about Red or Blue or a trainer from the games showing up and whooping that ass. This could be the coolest thing in the galaxy if it happened but I doubt it, and fourth would be Psyduck stroking out and exploding Mewtwo but that's more like a meme.. I only had three good options 😔 lol

@bobevanz -

Well, with Pikachu having amnesia, I've been riding the train that he'll end up being Ash/Red's Pikachu... and it's a seasoned Ash/Red, not a rookie. They've been fighting Team Rocket, Giovanni, and Mewtwo for years... during one of their last battles, Pikachu is hit with the amnesia attack before being lost.

Mewtwo arrives sensing THIS Pikachu, and a life force that matches a scientist that worked in his Lab: Tim, being his father's son.

Ash shows up to put in work on Mewtwo only to learn Mewtwo isn't there for destruction... he needs Tim to help his father so his father can help Mewtwo do... something.

HAHA, I mean at this point I think that would be the best we can hope for since they decided for their first run to go with Detective Pikachu instead of what the fans really wanted which is the OG... What disappoints me is that they could have started with the Ash stories and so the reveals or Evolutions of guys like Charizard etc would have had a greater impact in future movies. Instead we get everyone out the gate.

Oh well, I will still see it with my daughter and most likely enjoy it

No one ever seems to mention the small group of Chimecho.
It's a blink and you'll miss it moment but they're in there.
