While the home video release of
Avengers: Endgame may have stolen some of Pikachu's thunder this morning, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has officially announced that
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will arrive on Digital HD on July 23rd and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on August 6.
The Rob Letterman-directed film, which featured Ryan Reynolds (
Deadpool 2) as the voice of the titular detective, was a pretty solid hit for Warner Bros., grossing over $425.1 million worldwide ($142M domestic; $283.1M foreign) on an estimated $150 million production budget.
The home video release will come packaged with a ton of special features, including a special detective mode, an alternate opening, a Pokémon Adventure, five extensive behind-the-scenes making of documentaries, an audio commentary from Mr. Mime, a funny Outside the Actor's Studio short from Ryan Reynolds, and the official "Carry On" music video.

“POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” also stars Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “Paper Towns,” “Every Day”) as Tim and Kathryn Newton (“Lady Bird,” TV’s “Big Little Lies,” “Blockers”) as Lucy, a junior reporter following her first big story. The supporting cast includes Suki Waterhouse (“Insurgent,” “Love, Rosie,” “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”), Omar Chaparro (“Overboard,” “Kung Fu Panda”), Chris Geere (TV’s “Modern Family,” TV’s “You’re The Worst,” “Ill Behavior”), multi-platinum-selling singer-songwriter Rita Ora (TV’s “America’s Next Top Model,” “Fifty Shades Of Grey”), Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai,” “Inception,” “Godzilla”) and Bill Nighy (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,” “Love Actually,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”).
The film was directed by Rob Letterman (“Goosebumps,” “Monsters Vs. Aliens”), from a story by Dan Hernandez, Benji Samit and Nicole Perlman, screenplay by Hernandez, Samit, Letterman and Derek Connolly, based on the “Detective Pikachu” video game developed by Creatures Inc. It was produced by Mary Parent and Cale Boyter for Legendary Pictures, and Hidenaga Katakami and Don McGowan for The Pokémon Company. Serving as executive producers were Joe Caracciolo, Jr., Ali Mendes, Tsunekazu Ishihara, Kenji Okubo, Toshio Miyahara, Hiro Matsuoka, and Koji Ueda.
Letterman’s creative filmmaking team includes two-time Oscar nominated director of photography John Mathieson (“The Phantom of the Opera,” “Gladiator”), production designer Nigel Phelps (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Lies”), editors Oscar winner Mark Sanger (“Gravity”) and James Thomas (“Muppets Most Wanted”) and costume designer Suzie Harman (“RocknRolla”).The music is composed by Henry Jackman (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”). Visual effects are by Moving Picture Company (“Wonder Woman”) and Framestore (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”).

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures present a Legendary Pictures Production, in association with Toho Co., Ltd., a Rob Letterman Film, “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu.” It will be distributed outside of Japan and China by Warner Bros. Pictures, in Japan by Toho Company, Ltd. and by Legendary East in China.
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc of “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” will feature HDR that dramatically expands the color palette and contrast range. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc of “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” will also feature a Dolby Atmos® soundtrack remixed specifically for the home theater environment to place and move audio anywhere in the room, including overhead. To experience Dolby Atmos at home, a Dolby Atmos enabled AV receiver and additional speakers are required, or a Dolby Atmos enabled sound bar. Dolby Atmos soundtracks are also fully backward compatible with traditional audio configurations and legacy home entertainment equipment.
“POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” will also be available on Movies Anywhere. Using the free Movies Anywhere app and website, consumers can access all their eligible movies by connecting their Movies Anywhere account with their participating digital retailer accounts. Fans can also own “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” via purchase from digital retailers beginning July 23.
SYNOPSIS
When detective Harry Goodman goes missing, his son Tim (Justice Smith) and Harry’s former Pokémon partner Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) join forces to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together on an epic adventure through Ryme City, they uncover a shocking plot that could destroy the whole Pokémon universe.

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim (Justice Smith) to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds): a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself.
