We found out at at Anime Expo 2018 last summer that Legendary Pictures planned to partner with Sunrise to produce a live-action adaptation of the popular Gundam anime, which is generally credited with popularizing the giant robot genre all the way back in 1979.

There had been no movement on the project since, but now we have word on a writer that should make Gundam fans very happy indeed.

According to THR, Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Saga) has signed on to pen the script. The report doesn't reveal any other details on the project, but for those unfamiliar with this property, the studio's press release contains a handy synopsis which you can check out below.

The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity's growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted. The battles in the story, in which the characters pilot robots known as mobile suits, are wildly popular.

@knocturnalzen10 - Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory is my favorite.

@knocturnalzen10 - For my money, there's no beating the original series. A bunch of kids thrown into a war lurching from disaster to disaster without a chance to catch a breath. The wave after wave of new mobile suit types the throw against White Base. Amuro going into snot-nosed killing rampages that made an entire army tremble.

One of my favorite games of the PS2 era was Zeonic Front. The big clunky clanking of a Zaku, the confusion as radar blips appear and disappear on your scope, and realizing that if you caught sight of Amuro in that [frick]ing white mobile suit, you only had a split second to fire or you may already be dead. I love the old One Year War stuff.

I've liked some of the other later stuff, too, but nothing beats that original series.

I’ve never actually watched this show. Are these like Pacific rim suits or like Hulk buster suits? And what’s it about I guess! Haha I love myself so fighting robots!

@DarkArrow19 - well, they're much smaller than the Pac Rim robots (around 20/25 meters tall).

@Spidey91 - I agree—that series is basically the likes of “Platoon”, “Full Metal Jacket”, and “Apocalypse Now” with giant robot suits.

I'm not familiar with this guy's work, but apparently he has a knack for writing likeable characters and later killing them. based on that alone he's kind of perfect lol.

A Gundam film is the way to go. There’s so many series that you honestly could do an original storyline set in the same universe as long as the core elements are right.

@ItsMilesMorales - "do an original storyline set in the same universe"
Wouldn't that be G-Saviour?

From the synopsis it seems like they're adapting the OG Gundam series. I hope it's successful and we get Gundam Wing down the line.
