UPDATE: SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Star Zendaya Among Three Finalists To Play ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL

James Cameron is producing and Robert Rodriguez is directing Fox's adaptation of the popular manga.

Though James Cameron was originally slated to direct the live-action Alita: Battle Angel (they've tinkered with the title slightly), last year we found out that his commitment to the Avatar sequels meant that he had to hand over the reigns to Sin City helmer Robert Rodriguez.

The duo have been searching for a star ever since, and according to THR they're very close to finding their girl. Apparently Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Maika Monroe (It Follows)l, and Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) are all in the running to star as the cyborg bounty hunter- though sources report that Zendaya looks like the frontrunner at this point.

No release date has been set for Alita: Battle Angel yet as the project is still not officially greenlit. Word is the studio is still trying to get the budget under control. You can check out the synopsis below.

UPDATE: According to Variety, Bella Thorne is also a finalist.

Set in the 26th century, ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL tells the story of Alita, an amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor. The rebuilt Alita, remembering only her training in a deadly martial art, becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. Within the context of an epic action-adventure, the film will explore a young woman’s journey of self-discovery and finding love.
