After the unprecedented popularity of the Pokemon GO mobile game, it was only a matter of time before a live-action movie was officially announced, and we recently found out that it'd be an adaptation of Great Detective Pikachu - which is actually a different Nintendo 3DS video game that debuted in Japan this year.

Now, Variety reports that Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch (GOTG, Gravity Falls) have been tasked with writing the script, which is expected to revolve around an unusually intelligent Pikachu who solves crimes with his human pal.

No details on a director yet, but production is expected to commence next year.
