BOX OFFICE: ANT-MAN Closing In On $500 Million As THE MARTIAN Nears $400 Million

BOX OFFICE: ANT-MAN Closing In On $500 Million As THE MARTIAN Nears $400 Million

It's been a weekend of box office flops in North America, with Jobs, Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension, and The Last Witch Hunter all bombing hard. However, things are looking up overseas as both Ant-Man and The Martian near significant benchmarks...

Like Guardians of the Galaxy before it, many predicted that Marvel's Ant-Man would be the studio's first flop. Far from it. After a stellar opening in China, the Peyton Reed helmed release grossed an additional $22.2 million in The Middle Kingdom this weekend, taking its 10 day haul up to an amazing $82.2 million. That makes it the country's second biggest Marvel release of all-time behind only Guardians of the Galaxy. As of right now, Ant-Man has earned $314.8 million internationally for a worldwide haul of $493.81 million. It should pass $500 million any day now. Another movie doing well is The Martian; the Sir Ridley Scott helmed release held on to #1 for another weekend in North America and is closing in on $400 million in total, a great result for an original sci-fi movie.

Starring Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Judy Greer, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Pena, John Slattery, and Hayley Atwell, Ant-Man is set to be released digitally on November 17th and on DVD and Blu-ray on December 8th. Will you be picking up a copy? Sound off below.

The Martian was excellent. One of the best movies of the year. Ridley back to form. Let's hope he can keep it up for Prometheus 2.

Also, that's cool for Ant-Man.

Also, I love Jessica Chastain. She's got style, and she's got authentic magnetism.
And she's funny.

And yet some idiots will still call Ant-Man a flop..

But seriously, congratulations to both movies! Especially The Martian, what an awesome movie.

That's cool to see Antman doing well it shows even lesser known characters can make money.

The Martian was good glad to see a good movie from Scott after The Counselor and Prometheus and Exodus haha.

Yeah $500+ milllion on Ant-Man's comparative meagre budget and lower tier superhero status is a success whichever way you spin it. Good on Marvel, they can seemingly do little wrong on the box office front!

"That makes it the country's second biggest Marvel release of all-time behind only Guardians of the Galaxy."

WRONG. It's the 2nd highest grossing non-sequel in that territory.

Antman will finish around $520+ M, aka, 4 times its investment cost.

Also FF4 has officially closed its run on thursday with $167,397,693 worldwide after losing all its theater count on week 4 in Japan where it bombed.

FF4 closed after 11 weeks of domestic run.

I still need to see "The Martian". Hopefully its success with finally convince Hollywood that Mars isn't box office poison.

Go Ant-man! Really fun flick, and I'm glad to see that it's doing so well.

Thanks for the compliment or wait it was a low blow of some sort.... correct? I found his role offensive..... again it is a personal opinion. Obviously by the way you just spelled flavor I assume you are not from states so of course you found his character hilarious!

Did not think initially that Antman would do so well in China since it does not have giant robots or exploding cars. Come to find out they believe the ant is the righteous insect go figure. It will do around 100mil there. Who would have guessed that would happen. Bring on Antman and the Wasp.
