AQUAMAN Producer Reveals Plot Clues For The TRENCH Spinoff And Discusses The Wait For A True Sequel

The Aquaman sequel was given a 2022 release date but the film's producer, Peter Safran, says the Trench will arrive "significantly before Aquaman 2" while sharing some details on the horror-tinged spinoff.

Aquaman fans were a tad alarmed by the news that a Trench spinoff was in the works, but those fears were somewhat allayed when confirmation of a sequel followed shortly after. However, producer Peter Safran has indicated that the wait for said sequel might be longer than the film's current Dec. 16, 2022  release date.

Speaking to THR, Safran stated that, "We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie.  hen, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2."

He also confirmed that neither Jason Momoa's Aquaman nor Amber Herd's Mera would appear in the Trench spinoff and that it would be set after the events of the first Aquaman film. Perhaps more interesting was the revelation that the Trench would arrive "significantly before Aquaman 2."

Unless work on the spinoff began long before it was announced, it's unlikely to hit theaters before 2021.

Trench...spin-off?

Why not just focus on the Trench for Aquaman 2?

WTF?

Aslong as the film doesn't take the place/ delay another film. I have no problem with the Trench film.

Aquaman, Thor, Black Panther, etc all create unique worlds that are rife for exploration, and that can be limiting if you only explore them through one character.

@StormXmen123 - yeah...but this would be like making a movie about the ice giants in the case of thor and about the white gorilla crew for black panther, without either of the heroes...makes no logical sense, i cant even say it makes business sense, this is just a weird thing to do, especially with no Momoaman.

@four20smoke - Of course it makes financial sense.
Low budget Horror movie and all they have to do is add a “From the World of Aquaman” tag line.
Instant $$$$

You think that's ridiculous, in Phase 5 Marvel is making a movie where the ant from Ant-Man & Wasp starts a ska band, and not to be outdone the octopus from Aquaman is going full grindcore.

I honestly think this movie is a mistake.

Conjuring Playbook. Yep. Solid move.

So if WB wants to make each main hero a mother ship to branch off other stories...

That lends credibility to what Ezra Miller was saying the other day about a SPEEDSTER-VERSE.

Aquaman - Trench and others
The Flash - Stories on other Speedsters
Wonder Woman - Spielbergs Blackhawk Movie
New Gods - Oh man...tons of options.

How about a movie about
Flash
Green Lantern
Superman
Oh look money....let us run over there....Oh look money...let us run over here.
So many comic book fans have lists of movies they would love to see and I am pretty sure the trench is not high on most peoples list. Stop screwing Superman!

A Trench movie is stupid. Four years between movies is ridiculous. Way to strike when the iron is hot. What are they going to do if Shazam is a big hit? Tell the story of a married guy with two kids who turns into a superhero on Sunday afternoons after his nap?

Please don’t screw this up WB. Your characters are so amazing.

Must be splitting the CGI costs of Aquaman. Just reuse the water tech and double dip. Not like they would admit it tho.

I'm not going to pooh this idea just yet. There's still a chance this could introduce characters like Lagoon Boy, Trench King, Scavenger, Creature King, Ch'tok. I doubt they'd just make a film about the monsters themselves.

DC have far more interesting intellectual properties than the [frick]ing Trench.
