Aquaman fans were a tad alarmed by the news that a Trench spinoff was in the works, but those fears were somewhat allayed when confirmation of a sequel followed shortly after. However, producer Peter Safran has indicated that the wait for said sequel might be longer than the film's current Dec. 16, 2022 release date.
Speaking to THR, Safran stated that, "We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie. hen, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2."
He also confirmed that neither Jason Momoa's Aquaman nor Amber Herd's Mera would appear in the Trench spinoff and that it would be set after the events of the first Aquaman film. Perhaps more interesting was the revelation that the Trench would arrive "significantly before Aquaman 2."
Unless work on the spinoff began long before it was announced, it's unlikely to hit theaters before 2021.
