Jason Momoa Researching New 52 For AQUAMAN Role; Asks Fans To "Keep An Open Mind"

The former Game Of Thrones star sat down for a Q&A at Dallas Comic-Con recently and shared a few interesting new tidbits about his upcoming turn as the King of Atlantis in the DCEU. If you weren't a fan of his look for the character, you might want to prepare for more alterations...

When Jason Momoa's Aquaman was unveiled for the first time, some fans were not best pleased with how different he looked from his comic book counterpart. Though it seems to have grown on a lot of people, from the sounds of things there are going to be a few more changes to get used to.

When the Conan The Barbarian actor appeared at Dallas Comic-Con he was quizzed about his take on the character and, though he couldn't go into too much detail, he did reveal that he's been researching the New 52 version of Aquaman, but that fans should "keep an open mind" about some of the "new things" they'll be doing for his big-screen outing.

“So, there’s not really a lot of spoilers I can give away. But the research I’ve done on the New 52 stuff with Geoff Johns, and just researching who he is, he’s amazing. He’s got a lot of powers. He’s extremely tough. He’s super strong. But I’m excited about... there’s a big beautiful map laid out and I wish I could carry it with me. It’ll come out soon enough and you’ll see just how big it’s going to be.”

Momoa went on to reiterate what an honor it was for him to be able to portray this character. You can check out the full video of the Q&A below. What do you think will be the most significant alteration to the comic book incarnation of Aquaman we'll be seeing?

I'm eager to see an underwater fantasy/superhero movie, but I would've preferred Namor to come first. The truth is I never read DC stuff when I was a kid, I was raised with Marvel comics… since they were the only ones available in my country at that time. And Byrne's Namor was my favorite comic!

Besides, Momoa looks more like Jae Lee's savage Namor than Aquaman, IMO…

I don't think it's just a coincidence that Excalibur is showing at the cinema when Bruce Wayne's parents are killed. A film about a band of heroes coming together to form a team with King Arthur at the head? With a sword given to him by the Lady of the Lake?
I think Snyder is doing something very grand and classical, here. And if you want to construct something definitive about the mythology of the superhero, then Atlanteans are indeed as important as aliens (or for that matter humans that try to become the best they can be or are advanced by technology/science).
Just food for thought.

Also, as far as Aquaman comics go, the Geoff Johns stuff was really entertaining, but for my money it is all about Peter David's run.
The Atlantis Chronicles is essential reading for any Aquaman fan.
If only for this moment of sheer raunch.

Interresting. The first-ever DC comic book I've read was Kingdom Come, so when I think of Aquaman, I immediately see this King Arthur-type character.

I'm not entirely sure us comic book fans are known for keeping an open mind. We're a passionate bunch.

With that being said, if he can capture the most important elements of new 52 aquaman then I'm good.

CharlyZarkov@ Even more interesting when you think back to all those early BvS script rumors that spoke about a Kingdom Come influence in the film. Hmmm.
Also, I agree Namor > Aquaman.

I think the best that could happen for both Marvel and DC fans is that the studios try to differentiate their similar characters as much as possible. So if/when Namor comes to the MCU, he sould be CEO of Oracle Inc., and not a noble arthurian warrior. Also, I think Aquaman is supposed to be a real good guy, while Namor is a total douche (which suits him well).

Momoa isn't playing Arthur Curry aka Aquaman. He is playing Aquabiker. This is clearly evident because he didnt make any change to his appearance as most actors would have. No haircut, no blond hair, lots of tattoos, etc.

Now we are asked to keep an open mind ... I have a bad feeling about this. Momoa isn't a good actor, he does not have much range.

Good. Johns Aquaman was great, shame it had to end.If they focus on his trouble balancing his responsibilities between his two homes it should work nicely. Plus Id love to see a scene where hes arguing his authority to world leaders

I'm willing to the character a chance but Mehmoa is a douchey dude... Hope he doesn't suck.

and while we are casting people who shouldn't be DC characters I pick Gambino for Jon Stewart...
