Hayley Atwell Really Didn't Like How Captain Carter Was Treated In Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

Hayley Atwell continues to express her disappointment with the treatment of her Captain America variant in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness...

Hayley Atwell debuted as Steve Rogers' love interest, Peggy Carter, in Captain America: The First Avenger, but the British actress got the opportunity to voice a very different take on the hero in the What If...? Animated series, before suiting up as "Captain Carter" for a brief appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Unfortunately, Miss Carter really couldn't "do this all day," and ended up being brutally dispatched by the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) along with the rest of the Multiversal Illuminati.

Atwell has expressed her frustration with her character's treatment in the past, and continued to bemoan Peggy's fate during a recent appearance at London's For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi event.

“I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened in that scene. It's so small and she gets frisbee’d to death… I felt like that was a complete disservice to the character.”

We're not sure we'd call it a disservice, exactly (Atwell was only playing a variant, and Wanda killed off several other, more formidable characters as a way to demonstrate how powerful she had become), but it is easy enough to understand her disappointment.

Thankfully, Atwell will get the chance to return as Peggy (and maybe even Captain Carter) in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars were hit with significant delays last year, with Doomsday now set to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, and Secret Wars positioned for December 17, 2027.

Both movies will be directed by the Russo brothers, who also make their MCU return after helming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame

"Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday. Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Doomsday will star:

Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Florence Pugh as Yelena, Danny Ramirez as Falcon, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, James Marsden as Cyclops, Channing Tatum as Gambit, and Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent

Along with Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Letitia Wright as Black Panther, Tenoch Huerta Mejia as Namor, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, and, of course, Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

Don’t even know why she is upset.
She should be thankful that Raimi and the Editors didn’t leave her on the cutting room floor.
She got some screen time, dammit.

Among the Illuminati, she at least put up some relevance of a fight.

@HumanRubiksCube -

The whole storyline pretty much revolves around her character not only being alive (certainly for Doomsday), but also very present and pivotal.

@spr0cks - she was a what if cameo that basically begged the blue fairy to make her a real boy. not a fan, that is all

Kinda like the Hulk in Brand New Day.

The story would have been exactly the same without any loss in value if you swapped out Hulk with {*insert-berseker-type-hero-here-who-gets-mind-controlled*}

@spr0cks - I don’t know. I think they used Hulk to launch Savage Hulk in the next movie or Secret Wars. Not saying you’re wrong just I suspect they used Hulk for his popularity and to launch this incarnation.

I think the powers that be really thought that all of those deaths were going to be "holy shit!" moments to demonstrate Wanda's power. Instead, we got no true sense of them being that powerful - They all seemed dumb & nerfed. It didn't look like Wanda was extremely powerful; it looked like they were extremely weak. So unfortunate. Those deaths were unnecessary. Really unfortunate. If you're going to have fan service like that through cameos, don't [frick]ing immediately kill them or make them look stupid. Honestly, same with Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine. I get it, but it doesn't make it good just that it was Human Torch. And it doesn't demonstrate the villain as being exceptionally powerful... It's lazy.

@blacksocksdaily - I think the sentry fight in thunderbolts is a much better version of the same kind of fight. Those guys are soooo much weaker than sentry compared to the illuminati against wanda, but it did a much better job of showcasing how outclasses the thunderbolts were. There was no way in hell that they were gonna beat sentry. The illuminati should have been a far more even fight but they all acted like idiots.

Would've been cool to see them carry through the movie more at least. Reed, Captain Carter, Black Bolt, Xavier... They could've done some cool shit with them on screen to the delight of fans & casual viewers. A flashback of defeating Thanos, again.... I think they think that demonstrated how powerful they are. It's a yawn when we've already seen Thanos defeated AND it's a friggin superhero movie. Emotional weight will always win, and they wasted it in this one. I agree with Atwell.

@blacksocksdaily - That movie was so freakin lazy in the storytelling arena (the most important place with these movies). The only spots that movie shines briefly is when Raimi decides to be inventive with his portrayal of stuff (Strange throwing music as weapons or traveling briskly through one universe after another)...largely that movie sucks and agree with Hatwell as well as your critiques. Boo I say, boo.

Show some gratitude, your character lasted longer than Blackbolt and Reed Richards, both of which died screaming.

Sounds like she was expecting to have the typical Marvel BossGirl treatment - a trope that has me not watching most of these movies anymore.

I mean , I get her being disappointed since she’s protective of her character as she should be but she was a variant of a variant lol so one version of her being met with an unceremonious end isn’t a big deal to me atleast.

Also I still think MoM is good since I feel they do Strange & Wanda’s arc of essentially facing reality for their own respective reasons well (even if the latter’s is somewhat of a retread) amongst other things.

Plus how can movie that has this be truly bad..;).

The point was demonstrating that that universe sucks, though. The illuminati executes Strange? Strange knowingly causes an incursion? It’s just like the first multiversal version of strange that tries to kill America. Those other variants suck and all of them going out like chumps just shows that they aren’t the sacred timeline.
Spiderfan2226
Spiderfan2226 - 8/24/2026, 3:05 PM
I like atwell but they not only didn’t do her character a ‘disservice’, the character really doesn’t warrant the amount of attention and screen time it’s gotten already. ‘Captain carter’ was always kind of a silly fun what if gimmick. Kinda sucks Atwel didn’t get a meatier role, because she’s defined good enough to be an MCU headliner. but she did manage to make her supporting role really give some weight to the lore of Cap, which is ultimately her contribution to the MCU. So unless they have some scenes to add some emotional stakes for Cap, she should basically be done with the MCU.

I thought she came across as over powered compared to Wanda who had just spaghettified Reed and removed Black Bolt’s mouth.

The problem is once you set a power level at ‘removing a man’s mouth’, it then just makes sense that she would do that for everyone she comes across. Why is mouth removal not her immediate go-to move?

Also i know it’s controversial, just to add that Krasinkski Reed was my favourite, purely as a casting choice.
