AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors Can't Imagine Anyone Ever Replacing Robert Downey Jr. As Iron Man

It's widely believed that Avengers 4 will mark the final appearance of Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man but the Russo Brothers have revealed in a new interview that they don't ever see him being replaced...

Robert Downey Jr. has been playing Tony Stark for a decade now so it makes sense that Avengers 4 will mark the end of his tenure as Iron Man. Before we get to that, though, we have Avengers: Infinity War to look forward to and the movie's co-director Joe Russo has now addressed the rumours about the actor's departure. However, he claimed that there's been no talk of Downey Jr. leaving the role (who knows if that's true) and noted that "there is nobody who can take over Iron Man from Robert."

"He can’t play the character forever," he admitted. "I am sure there are lots other things he wants to do in his career. But he loves playing the character, I know that, and we love working together. We will see where it goes from here." That's frustratingly vague but probably a good indication that when the actor walks away from the MCU, we likely won't see another actor replace him for a while (if ever).

We'll just have to wait and see how things pan out with his Iron Man future but the filmmaker was quick to point out that there's no one quite like him on set. "Robert is an incredible leader. He is a very warm and inclusive human being. He is great in keeping everyone’s spirits high and making everyone feel invited in the process… In the healthy creative space." What do you think comes next for the hero in Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

From What I gather from interviews, it seems rdj has been just as important off screen as he has on screen. Seems like a class act. He'll be hard for marvel to replace whenever he goes

@MyCoolYoung - Definitely the case from stuff I’ve read too. Just a genuine person to be around and work with.

I can’t picture any body else as Tony Stark but RDJ. I have a hard time even fathoming that Tom Cruise was considered back in the day but so glad we got who we got😊

@ChangAlang - lots of young talented actors can play the part. I honestly think it be better to go a bit younger after A4! RDJ is incredible but he asks for too much money while his costars should have been paid more

"In the healthy creative space."

It's nice to see Joe Russo talk about the DCEU.

@ChangAlang - I wish I knew why I can't see anything from Tenor. it's all broken links, always :( Localization, perhaps.

@Asturgis - How odd! The majority of my posts are from my phone and in the Tenor site not the app so that could have something to do with it as well?! The GIPHY site doesn’t create the link properly and I couldn’t for the life of me work out the app **numbskull award winner.

Anyway, it was Fresh Prince making a “Oh, I can’t believe you said that” face

Never recast, I re watched the avengers for the first time in years, still so good, caps suit stands out like a saw thumb though now, the “maybe the world needs a little old fashion” line kind of justifys it though

He's not going anywhere. The MCU will simply shift from the Avengers to the X-Men and the Fantastic 4 in Phase 5.

@emeraldtaurus - Cap for sure. I think they will just have Tony retire.

I still tbonk its possible to get another solo IM movie in, with a proper Mandarin. Let him retire, take 4 or 5 years off. Old and tired Tony, the family man, who doesn't know how to be an Avenger anymore.

One day, the real Mandarin comes knocking to complete what that imposter started. Real rings. Real magic. Tony's tech is almost useless. No buddy cop, no Avengers. He needs the help but refuses to "start all that back up again." Has to handle it himself.

I would watch the shit out of that.

@OptimusPrimeTime - a+

For sure the way they should go, if they don’t kill him.

I think they should kill him though. Make this movie go down into legend.

I love it when a movie can pull all the emotions out of me. It’s very very rare, most recent movie to do that was drive (yeah finally saw it guys, and ofc I love it).

They gotta kill cap or tony. For this to be the best movie it can be. No exceptions. Sorry Spock and deth.

Preferably tony, that will have the most impact I believe.

That’s what they say now until Disney wants to reboot Marvel after the Fox deal is finalized and they want to do an Avengers vs X-Men movie series.

@Asturgis - Yeah I think so😲

I asked the same question in the icy Han Solo pic thread. Someone asked Nate if it’s possible to block editors as well.
