Robert Downey Jr. has been playing Tony Stark for a decade now so it makes sense that Avengers 4 will mark the end of his tenure as Iron Man. Before we get to that, though, we have Avengers: Infinity War to look forward to and the movie's co-director Joe Russo has now addressed the rumours about the actor's departure. However, he claimed that there's been no talk of Downey Jr. leaving the role (who knows if that's true) and noted that "there is nobody who can take over Iron Man from Robert."
"He can’t play the character forever," he admitted. "I am sure there are lots other things he wants to do in his career. But he loves playing the character, I know that, and we love working together. We will see where it goes from here." That's frustratingly vague but probably a good indication that when the actor walks away from the MCU, we likely won't see another actor replace him for a while (if ever).
We'll just have to wait and see how things pan out with his Iron Man future but the filmmaker was quick to point out that there's no one quite like him on set. "Robert is an incredible leader. He is a very warm and inclusive human being. He is great in keeping everyone’s spirits high and making everyone feel invited in the process… In the healthy creative space."
