When Sebastian Stan was answering questions at a panel at Wizard World St. Louis, he came across the notion of how enjoyable it was to play Bucky Barnes and witness his character change throughout the movies.

"I’ve been enjoying rediscovering him in the last few movies, including Infinity War, because he started out a certain way and then it was such a hard left with Winter Soldier, it was immediately like a whole different ballgame. So now it’s been fun going back a little bit and finding different things that we discovered in that early movie and putting them back in little by little, finding out where is he now."

Bucky's character has definitely been through more than just a 'hard left' in his character arc. He fought side-by-side with his best friend, Steve Rogers during the Second World War, then got captured and brainwashed by Hydra. He worked as an assassin for over 50 years under Hydra's influence, until being found once again by Steve Rogers in modern times.

He caused the Avengers to divide and he eventually had to fight when they clashed against each other in the Civil War. Last time we saw him, he was put in cryo-sleep in Wakanda, in hope to remove Hydra's brainwashing.

But, we know that Bucky was defrosted, and was fitted a brand new bionic arm to fight alongside T'Challa, Steve and the rest of the Avengers in the biggest war yet, Infinity War. After the events of Civil War, Bucky might not be on great terms with the other Avengers, so his interactions with others would certainly be compelling to watch.

He also addressed the idea of Bucky becoming Captain America, but finding an appropriate way to do it, might be a challenge.

"[...] I just think … it would be a very different Captain America you know, you wouldn’t be able to have the same Captain America as you have right now because he’s a different guy. Again, there’s this issue where we’ve got to get him to be trustworthy enough for them to give him that responsibility, you know, to fill those shoes, and those are hard shoes to fill. So I think it’s possible, I really do, but it just has to make sense and we might need a little more time."

Once again, we will see in Avengers: Infinity War if the Hydra brainwashing was successfully removed or not.

Bucky becoming Captain America would be an amazing character arc, and a likely one. As the MCU progresses, many characters are also going through drastic changes, such as Thor, The Hulk and now recently Steve Rogers. If not Bucky, there is always Anthony Mackie's The Falcon as the next best choice.
