Is There Any Way Avengers: Secret Wars Can Make Its Current December 2027 Release Date?

Taking how long Avengers: Doomsday took to wrap (reshoots only finished up this week) into account, can Secret Wars hope to make its current December 2027 release date?

Can Avengers: Secret Wars hope to make its current release date?

Fans were already sceptical, but these latest shooting updates have left many more wondering how Marvel Studios and directors Joe and Anthony Russo could possibly have the movie ready for theaters by December 17, 2027.

We had heard that shooting was scheduled to get underway in August, but the trades are now reporting that cameras won't start rolling until later this month or possibly even early October.

During a recent interview with AP News, the Russos revealed that they had begun “soft prepping” production on Secret Wars.

“When you’re doing one of these movies it’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done,” Joe told the site. “When you’re doing two of them, it’s almost inconceivable. But it’s the second time around we’re doing two back to back.”

Doomsday filmed from April until September 2025, with reshoots only just wrapping up. The movie is set to hit theatres this December. Assuming Secret Wars follows a similar shooting schedule and filming doesn't commence until late September/early October, it would be well into 2028 before the film is released.

It seems like a Herculean task, especially given the massive scale of Secret Wars,  but - despite what they said above - there is a chance the Russos have already been working on the movie and may have even filmed some scenes already.

It's also likely that work will go a little faster on Secret Wars since the Russo brothers and their cast and crew are still "in the zone" from shooting Doomsday, and with a lot of the sets already built, they definitely shouldn't need to spend as much time on pre-production.

What do you think? Will Secret Wars be hit with another delay? Let us know in the comments.

Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars were hit with significant delays last year, with Doomsday now set to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, and Secret Wars positioned for December 17, 2027.

Both movies will be directed by the Russo brothers, who also make their MCU return after helming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame

"Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday. Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Doomsday will star:

Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Florence Pugh as Yelena, Danny Ramirez as Falcon, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, James Marsden as Cyclops, Channing Tatum as Gambit, and Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent

Along with Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Letitia Wright as Black Panther, Tenoch Huerta Mejia as Namor, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, and, of course, Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

They did it with Endgame, right? Also between Doomsday and Secret Wars they have *checks notes* NOTHING coming out. So it's not like the studio and effects teams they use are pulled in 8 different directions.

@SATW42 - yep

There are no movies out and only as of now shows which are Daredevil Born Again S3 (which doesn’t use alot of VFX to my knowledge) and 2 animated shows in X-Men 97 and YFNSM but even then , those are all Marvel television which is its own department/studio now so the movie side can just focus on Secret Wars while obviously doing pre-production work on the likes of X-Men etc.

If it somehow doesn't make 12/27, and I really think it will, it would most likely only be delayed to Feb or March, but I really don't think that's gonna happen.

@OneMoreTime - it doesnt work like that.

and its not like Secret Wars will just have the same sets as Doomsday. If the Russo brothers are doing an actual big Battleworld, that would mean mostly all new sets and totally different and unique from each other.

I don’t care if it takes longer as long as it’s epic.

They need to wait for Doomsday numbers. Only then will they decide what course to take. With how sloppy Doomsday looks and feels, i wont ve surprised it it will be frontloaded in the BO

Here's an idea. Fire the Russos, bring Joss Whedon back and put it in July or Dec 2028.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 9/3/2026, 11:27 AM
@vectorsigma - Because Whedon did such a bang up job at course correcting on Justice League?
TheWinkler
TheWinkler - 9/3/2026, 11:51 AM
@Patient2670 - The worst part is that you could've just taken the Snyder cut, trimmed it down, and it would've been fine. All of Whedon additions were so terrible and really derailed the viewing experience because they were so apparent. Like, so bad it transcended the Snyder and DC argument and just became a textbook example of how to not do reshoots.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 9/3/2026, 12:24 PM
@TheWinkler - I agree. There were an awful lot of decisions made, that just make no sense to me. I will say this; I did kind of like the scene with Batman using the thief to bait the parademon. At least there, Whedon tried to make it look like Snyder's work. I think that scene could have worked in the snyder cut, somewhere around when it goes looking for the mother box in Victor's apartment.

And full disclosure, I really liked the Snyder cut, but I don't think it needed to be 4 hours long. There were definitely places that it could have been trimmed down substantially.

@Patient2670 - lolz justice league was a finished film when he got onboard while secret wars hasnt even started shooting yet.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 9/3/2026, 2:41 PM
@vectorsigma - Exactly. On justice league all he should have done was cut it down and do a few pick ups to meet the WB mandate of making it funnier. Instead, he reshot nearly the entire thing, and made something that was universally despised and imploded his own career, in the process.

Say what you want about Snyder, but Whedon did that movie absolutely zero favors.

Besides, the last Avengers movie that Whedon put his hands on, wasn't exactly beloved by the audiences. It made plenty of money, primarily on the strengths of the first one and the characters. Just like Iron Man 2 and Thor: the Dark World.

@vectorsigma - I mean...as much as I hate the Russos direction, Whedon is even worse.

The problem is not the direction tho, is the awful Rick and Morty writers. Putting a chinese cartoon writer to do a real movie was a mistake.
Loohnutick
Loohnutick - 9/4/2026, 1:44 AM
@vectorsigma - God no, don't need this fantastic take on Dr. Doom (so far) to be quipping every scene. Joss Whedon straight up invented that quip era that still shows in recent MCU films.

@MarkCassidy - they don't have to. They did the same with IW and Endgame
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 9/3/2026, 11:25 AM
I would be more than a little surprised if they haven't already grabbed som footage for Secret Wars during the shoot for Doomsday. It helps with actors schedules, any locations they might want to use in both films, etc. Of course, hat doesn't mean they'll make their target date, but it's certainly possible.
Irregular
Irregular - 9/3/2026, 11:58 AM
Most likely will be finished for that release date. It's a giant production, just because cameras aren't rolling doesn't mean an VFX team doesn't have work from approved storyboards to work on.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 9/3/2026, 12:05 PM
No way they make it unless they do so at the expense of the film’s quality lol
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/3/2026, 12:05 PM
I feel like it depends how much planning they have done from a production standpoint…

Hell , they could have even shot some footage already and are working on the VFX side by side & such.

Anyway , I do think they’ll be able to make it since December 2027 is still pretty far away (Hell , December 2026 still feels far) even though it might be tight!!.
ThorArms
ThorArms - 9/3/2026, 12:41 PM
I think it should've moved to May 2028, but Marvel went ahead and announced X-Men just a couple weeks ago. Would they do that if they didn't feel confident in the release date??

Just for perspective, Brand New Day started production in August 2025 and was ready less than a year later. So it's possible.

If they don’t think they can, then they shouldn’t. I always figured it’s best to give it the time it needs for the sake of quality.

But not like One Punch Man season 3. Whoever was behind that can eat a bag of dookie 💩
